Male Inmates with Female employees?
Female Inmates and Male employees?

My opinion - More investigation along with policies and procedure review needs to be completed regarding female employees working at male prisons and male employees working at female prisons. This is certainly not an issue that can be easily resolved; however, I do believe something has to be done to stop the many incidents from occurring.

Just two years ago, I lived through an incident where two inmates at a prison only 45 minutes from my home town escaped. People in fear. Small towns shut down. Homeowners with guns by their bedside while the manhunt went on in search of these two men who escaped while serving life sentences for murder.

NEWS - Joyce Mitchell had sexual relationships with both escaped N.Y. inmates
A female civilian worker love-struck with one inmates assisted their escape by providing them with the tools they needed.

NEWS - ANOTHER married female worker at maximum-security prison where two murderers escaped is charged with having sex with an inmate

This week, at the same correctional facility where these two inmates escaped, another female civilian worker now arrested for promoting contraband and having a sexual relationship with a male inmate.

This is nothing new, it occurs often – attraction/sexual contact between female employees with male inmates and male employees with female inmates.

I understand the equal employment opportunity but I wonder if some types of employment should be gender specific – most especially in these types of facilities.

I also understand the laws regarding gender discrimination in employment. But I begin to wonder as the more stories arise regarding these types of incidents occurring in our New York State prisons; not even to explore correctional facilities in other states in the United States or other countries for that matter.

As the daughter of a correctional officer, who worked at one time in this same facility I speak of, I saw the stress on him daily and the long hours worked being mandated at least two to three times weekly.

I also realize that there are more males working in this field than female. Not even touching on the fact of security and safety for both the employees and the inmates.

Something needs to be done – the continual incidents that occur seem to be rising according to the news reports I have reviewed.

My personal opinion – gender specific prisons. Females working in female prisons and males working in male prisons to help possibly stop the incidents from occurring.

However, in the short research I did complete, there appears to be more male inmates than female and in most states there are only one or two female facilities. Therefore, fewer jobs open to women if women can only guard women.

There seems to me to be no way to resolve this issue. But certainly something to think of.

And on a side note, and just some facts regarding this correctional facility back home:

Currently, a TV series is in the making by Ben Stiller regarding this event in my hometown area.
