I've been interested in exactly ZERO of the current trending posts.
I want to see the potentiation of new users, the exciting creation of new content and Steemit native celebrities.
We are not going to create our own regularcarreviews pewdiepie or smosh by upvoting the following shit (that I am rediculously bored with):
Bland witness posts by devs low on cocaine.
"Hi I'm a computer expert with a trophy wife, here's my completely uninteresting life story"
Men using their own wives as a sad form of clickbait to compensate for mediocre writing.
"I invested early in bitcoin" - yeah? Great! How bout you invest in Steemit, and write some good content. This is mining by blogging, not by boasting.
"Stop complaining that the website is unfair" - person with millions of dollars of STEEM.
"Here's a post from my successful blog, unaltered and a single tweet to my followers, please give me thousands of dollars for using Steemit.com as a glorified mirror server"
Posts I want to see:
I turned my STEEM in 500 hotdogs and started throwing them at people, here's the video.
How to turn STEEM into COCAINE, an addicts guide to cryptothuggery.
Here's a photo of my husbands hairy buttocks, it's about time women whored out their men.
I just ate my own fingers, and now there's blood everywhere. Can STEEM pay for a hospital bill?
I used to be a poor kid in africa, now I funded my own turf war and took over a diamond mine. First 500 comments gets a blood diamond!
If this post goes over $2000, I will go into work naked, playing the banjo.
These are the kinds of posts that will generate real interest and a real userbase. But you know, I'm just one of those 21st century idiots that believes in long term gain.
Cheers...

Thank you for writing something I actually wanted to read.
You couldn't be any more right. The low quality of some of these trending posts shocks me, while I've seen many good posts with zero votes and 0.0 dollars. I'm not mad at the posters, I respect anyone who makes money, just stating the truth as I see it.
I have no problem with the current system. People with more steem should have weighted votes, and its also not my system, I joined an existing social network. . .
However, I can't imagine the average reddit user told about steemit would lok at the trending page and say to herself, "yep, switching."
Steemit has the potencial to grow into a large diverse community that pays its users for high quality content and high quality responses to that content, monetized upvotes is something that is a wonderful idea, but if the trending page is cryptocelebrities I've never heard of and technical readings of todays bitcoin charts, that's not going to attract new users.
This is pretty much how I am feeling, I even ranted a little bit in this post found here ... its fucking blowing my mind how posts like that generate 5k while some pretty amazing posts I have seen generated a whopping .02 payouts. In my comments, I equated to the current trend of Steemit as a one big fucking crypto orgy right now, on its current path it's doomed to failure if they can't figure out a way to reward and incentivize people to vote on all kinds of great content, not just a few select areas of interest.
I am probably earning a bad rap for my current comments on this issue, but I promise it's only because I think Steemits idea and the premise is amazing and what the world of content creation needs.
One thing I have noticed is people with voting power right now must have a pretty dry sense of humor, or they believe there is no value in humor and storytelling type posts or something...
I wrote and posted this as my intro post which I feel is in a whole different hemisphere compared to the above introduction post in terms of quality and value, it generated me a whopping .48 cents vs 5k that joker got off of telling us he is here on steemit. Now I didn't bring up the fact in my intro post that I am an experienced writer (ghost and freelance) and have had some of my writings on websites like cracked.com because I prefer to use this platform as an outlet for writing about whatever I feel like on any given day, however, if it isn't going to net a reward, I will just go back to other avenues that I know will reward.
We need more voters who enjoy writings similar to those of people like Matt Forney, Mark Manson, and Erika Napolteno as an example.
For now, I guess we are stuck with infographs, bitcoin talk, and crypto world news.
This post made me lol, it's some good writing. I agree with the underlying point, too: it seems like super naive business practice to essentially give away equity in your company to people who already have platforms elsewhere before they have done any work. That's the exact opposite of how incentives are supposed to work. And, if raining cash on big names is supposed to bring in new users, then so far it's failing. You hit the law of diminishing returns pretty damn quick by just adding the next crypto-currency celebrity, since there's a huge overlap in their fan bases already.
Prexactly.
You should add a Steemit tag. This needs to be read.
done :)
Haha! A post that made be guffaw! Get in there!!
Seriously though, I am with you on the trending page, I rarely look at it and go either straight to a tag I am familiar or interested in or just to the new posts. Like I did with this one!
I appreciate the guffaw. If anything, we need more Scots; they're entertaining in the absence of encouragement, let alone after a whale upvote or two.
lmao, started a turf war in Africa, hahaha... and successful tips on making the big bucks as a Nigerian prince on gmail :)
If it's good enough for USD, it's good enough for STEEM :)
I couldn't stop myself. This is the first post I read on Steemit which made me laugh. Hats off to your sarcasm and sense of humor. Will look forward to interesting ones from you on my feed. All the best.
Victory is mine! (Glad you enjoyed it)
More like this plez
My thoughts on this is it is a problem that will be solved by user growth, if a hundred thousand more people join and 90% of those people wouldn't dig this current trending posts page, the added diversity of interest in the network will make the trending page more diverse.
The problem is the current trend hinders growth is what the OP was eluding to I believe :)
@meesterboom @dev @siren @mrwang you might enjoy this post.
The tendency of the most popular things on Steemit to become self-perpetuating doesn't surprise me at all. Vacuous things in our culture become famous for being famous all the time, and alas, the quality of a given piece of content, (not that such a thing could be quantitatively measured anyway,) will always be less important than the perceived social value of consociation. The desire of so many users to piggyback off of more established, financially viable users will only exacerbate this phenomenon.
This is the golden period where any old shite you can imagine makes pure bank. It won't last so make the most of it. Look at litecoin.
I prefer whoring out nature photos, but I can see where you are coming from.
After about a week on steemit, I tend to avoid the main page. If I like someone boring like that, I'll add them to my feed, but it is going to be via link hopping, or something like that.
And yeah that reminds me of an idea to fight using sticks of baloney. Perhaps something I should contemplate!
Hear Hear!
