I shoot generally on a smartphone. Photo quality is usually poor. If I try to edit, it only gets worse. I do not know how to edit photos well

Neither do I. GIMP has a couple of automatic features and I mostly use those: "White Balance Correction" & "Enhance Colours". 😂
