Just a short picture post for tree Tuesday of a monkey puzzle tree. This tree is native to Chile and Argentina but there are a few around town that seem to be doing just fine.
Monkeys have a hard time climbing on it because of the sharp spiny leaves, hence the name.
The tree is very interesting to look at, and described as a living fossil. The seeds of the tree are very tasty but it takes many years before the tree is mature enough to produce them. I just had to add a recent sunset picture I took. There are some more native trees silhouetted on the islands and land by the bay. I always like the look of the water in this area, the tide comes through a narrow passage way and creates a number of whirlpools. It can be dangerous for small boats. This is taken from a moving car.

The tree can be eaten? Many are deliberately cut down, but I want to ask, besides being eaten, is there any other usefulness? Thank you for sharing :)
The seeds of the tree are eaten and the wood is used too. I think they take a long time to get old enough to make seeds and cones.

I have never seen a monkey tree before! How interesting that it has no leaves, or has it shed its leaves for the season? I can see that the others have no leaves either so it must be after the season.
What do the seeds taste like? I am pretty sure if I were a monkey, that would look pretty tempting to me!
