Travel Norway #21 - Sylan - Hiking through Stugudalen valley.

in #travelfeed6 years ago

Heelo Friends!

Today I am happy to present another part of the series - this time a big gallery and story of my one-day-hike through Stuggudalen valley in beautiful autumn time.
Hope You will enjoy the gallery and my story. Let's begin...

IMG_0387-1-2.jpg

Location:

Stugudalen valley is a very large, flat area situated on a plateau among higher hills, mountains Sylan and big Nysjøen lake below. Actually, Stugudalen is a name of a village by the main road from Selbu to Røros, situated much lower, but it is commen to call the whole area Stugudalen.
The part of where I hiked during this trip is called Hamndalen... but I am not sure if someone is using the correct name ;)

Background Story:

We came to the location on evening day before. Me and @sawyn were planning to meet our friends - Darek, also landscape photographer and Johhny Wild - my good friend and great traveller. We found them already exploring the area. We used some light of sunset oto shoot few frames but very soon started also to look for a good spot for setting a camp.
It was very windy + I think it is windy all the time there...
We found the cozy place, in a little lower ground, hidden from wind, next to a river with good view on the area blow.
We spent together fantastic night with bon fire, chatting, grilling and drinking - but this is totally different story...

The Hike

Next day it was time to go and explore the area. Darek and Johnny went up to the mountains to shoot some frames in a dense fog and low clouds... I and @sawyn decided to wander around in lower parts, exploring the area of Niejtenjohke river (amazing name!!) some falls and marshes below the mountins.

Weather and light conditions:

The stream in lower parts is quite big, have few smaller and bigger falls on its way down to the lake. Autumnal vegetation around the river and in whole valley had amazing colours! The weather that day was great! Despite the very strong sun light, there was a lot of clouds on the sky - we were just right under a huge hole on the sky... heavy clouds were flying around us and we had a blue sky above our heads - interesting phenomenon - it was like thi almost whole day.

IMG_0290-1-2.jpg

Such situations generate a nice landscapes, where we had all bright and sunny on the ground and strong, dark and heavy clouds on the sky above horizon.
It was windy, the air was full of haze, low clouds above the mountains brought few very short showers. Higher the mountain we walked, closer to clouds we were - we experience much colder, wet and strong wind...

IMG_0360-1-2.jpg

The river

Walking around, looking for motives - the river was the first subject of course. Crystal clear waters, very cold (I was bathing in it a night before :D! ) was a good point to start the hike. Walking among the river is always great idea when we explore unknown location and looking for something to shoot. Water is always good subject!

IMG_0278-1-2.jpg

The plains

Plateau around us were huge! Open air above our heads and strong wind gave us amazing feeling of freedom... I was trying to catch the empty open space but it is always hard to show it on photo. How to show the real feeling of being very small in an enormous big open area...

IMG_0335-1-2.jpg

Trees

Next great motives we shoot were the trees - amazing small, miniature forms of birches with yellow, autumnal cover. Little colorful bonsai... Few examples I found around me:

IMG_0377-1-2.jpg

Ground details.

Marshes around the area ere covered by water in some parts. It was great misture of black mud, red water, red and green vegetation with rocky details...

IMG_0401-1-2.jpg

Yellow grassy bubbles on the picture above was on my best...
Another interesting find was this very old tree trunk. The roots were dried out but some parts hidden in the mud still stays strong and hard. I wonder how the area looked like a hundred years ago? Maybe more bigger trees were growing around. I think most of the big trees were used to build the road nearby and the dam near the mountains... I think this can be remining of that times...

IMG_0324-1-2.jpg

In such open, vast spaces it is always great to find a detail on the ground and focus on it, making the sku and far horizon just a background for the main object. Like the trunk above also these stone was a great detail in surrounding empty space:

IMG_0416-1-2.jpg

More interesting main subject - more interesting photo. remember to go low on the ground to fill up the biggest possible area of Your frame.

Against the sun light

On the trip I shoot many photos against the sun. I found it to be really attractive - the light in hazy air looked different than usual - it wa soft, warm, saturated...
I usually avoid this kind of effect but this time even the flares I found to be attractive. The light that day was great as You can see on the shots above and below...

IMG_0417-1-2.jpg

IMG_0427-1-2.jpg

Up the mountain

We walked by the river which now was much more shallow and running faster on steep rocky ground. Decided to go up until we will have a nice view on the whole valley and distant lake.

Exploring such areas are always excited!
Here - @sawyn walking above the river with his gear...

IMG_0488-1-2.jpg

We explore the area, finding more falls and a nice looking narrow gorge. It was very dangerous place, because as I found later - all the rocks above my head were very loose...
But the views from the gorge to the valley below was great!

IMG_0448-1-2.jpg

IMG_0455-1-2.jpg

This was the highest point I climbed - getting what I wanted - the nice view on the whole area!
As You can see - there is a lot of free space to wander around. Hundreds of ground motives to shoot, this is also the land of reindeers - both the wild ones and the ones which have owners...

IMG_0472-1-2.jpg

Unwanted photo

This is photo which I already don't remember how was done ;)... probably it was some mistake or a camera releases its shutter without informing me... anyway, I think it is interesting perspective and the shot itself has some moody light...

IMG_0493-1-2.jpg

The antler

Going down the hill we found another nice motive - a part of the wildlife of this land - reindeer antler.
After I took some shots, I left it where I found it - normally I would take it but this one was little damaged and I decided it will look much better on the ground there than in my place which is already very much cluttered ;).

IMG_0533-1-2.jpg

A way back

Few more shots on the way back to camping ground... The river and nice looking colorful vegetation.
The essence of autumn...

Summary

What to tell more - You see the results - was it good day - judge yourself. For me was great! Both, the evening day before and the day from this gallery.
I meet my good friends in such amazing landscapes, had great time together, make a lot of good material - all of us are always very busy outdoor ;). The light that day was a pure magic - real autumn - something I love in this time of the year. Hope to experience more of such fantastic trips in future!

Thanks guys for amazing time, thanks nature for amazing landscapes, thanks light for magical shots!

... and thank You for watching and supporting my works!!

Beautiful photos, excellent saturation and balance of colors as brightness. excellent game of juxtaposition of elements. It is definitely a very professional and even cinematographic work. Congratulations.

Thank You for such good opinion, I made a special preset in Lightroom especially for this photos - the light that day, the sky, colours, everything was quite unique and I wanted the whole gallery look similar, made in the same style. I am happy You liked it!

Interesting... thanks!

Superb shots you've got there. I guess you got a lot of good luck with that light and all the elements nature gave you that day. Wonderful work on your part nonetheless.

Did you use a neutral density filter when shooting against the sun?

Hi, thanks a lot for good comment, elements that day create really good shooting conditions, the light was strong but I took the risk and made many of the shots agains the sun, making some parts of the sky oversaturated - but in final, I liked the effect.
I am not sure, don't remember if I had a ND filter, that time I was using medium grad nd4 square filter so it is possible I had this attached in some shots.

Absolutely stunning photos. Looks like a trip I would take any time! How far was the nearest settlement or village ?

The place is about 10-12 km from a small village next to bigger road. So it is very quiet :). Thanks for comment.

This is exquisite work :-)

Thanks a lot! Happy You enjoyed it!

Haha you are so great that even an unwanted shot comes out awesome .
I would love to go outing with you and learn the ways someday.

Only sometimes ;)... I like ot be outdoor with some other photographers and share my observations - both sides can always learn a lot from each other.

Bra jobba !!!

Takk Takk!!

It was a great trip !!!

Agree. Was nice, always is good :D

Beautiful. Those autumn colors are so great! Thanks for taking us on a great tour of this area of your beautiful county!

Thanks a lot ! Happy You enjoyed it :). The country is not mine... I only live here temporary ;)...

Oh right you are from Poland correct?

Yes, correct :) Poland is also quite ok...in few places ;) hahahaa

What a beautiful, vast place @photovisions. I would have a hard time going back home after being in a place like that.

True, it is always hard to go back to small hose, surrounded by walls, with small windows to outside world...
After few days camping under the tent - I feel like I wish to sleep on a floor in my home rather than soft bed... Contact with nature is always great experience for me.

I have the same feeling, I even started to see most of the stuff in my house as useless; after living so long in a tent I feel like selling most of the furniture.

Everyone has these primal needs - minimalism, simplicity and being close to nature... :)

wow, stunning photos! Really amazing landscape!
You know, I've never been to Norway (and I'm Danish and been to 52 other countries!), crazy as it seems. But I will go one day!
I love when you get that weather with sun and dark clouds! It's my favorite photo conditions I think!
You definitely have a new follower and a resteem from here! (and an upvote of course)

Great story told by incredible pictures. I love those shots. What kind of ND filter do you use? The picture of the waterfall is really dynamic despite the long exposure....stunning. Great work
