Picture taken by my sister - Mihaela Valceanu
I will start this trip saying that I feel embarrassed to confess that I've been to Malaia (Valcea County) for way too many times - literally it's one of the places that made me realize how much I love camping, traveling and discovering new places from my country but I never knew that there is a waterfall really close to where we used to spend night after night around a campfire laughing and creating memories together. I remember that I visited Malaia 7 years ago when I was on a family trip and my father got a phone call from a friend of him saying that he together with his family and some other guys are camping in Malaia, and so they invited us to join the party and have some fun. Then once a year of every two years, we used to get on there and camp a few nights, even if we did't visit any touristic attractions it was like a tradition, like a place where we could go anytime to recharge our batteries for the next week which was coming, like a natural remedy for stress.
From what I've understood it's a waterfall which is not very well known by people, and thus there are not too many signs leading to this beauty. The waterfall was firstly discovered in 2016 by a group of travelers which then was promoted on TV. I remember my sister was browsing the internet searching for waterfalls and different beauties that can be visited along our way to home and so she discovered this waterfall. The interesting fact is that the waterfall has about 3 different names how is it called and is not just another waterfall from Romania but it's the HIGHEST from our country. Scorusu Waterfall is divided in two different waterfalls, the first one having 80 meters height and the other one, 20 meters. 💧
Once you get off the main road and enter into the forest you can drive like 10 mins then you will get to a parking lot where it's time to leave your car and start the real adventure. Reading different information from the internet we found out that the journey up to the waterfall takes like 40-45 mins long, but let's see.. 🗺️
From the very first steps we realize that the way up to Scorusu is going to be really challenging for us, walking on a very inclined surface created only by stones by different dimensions. Firstly we thought that there are just some pieces detached from the big rocks that were surrounding us, but as we move further, we realize that the path becomes increasingly difficult with multiple stones that are trying to slow us. Luckily we are never getting back from anything no matter how hard it seems to be, but embrace every challenge with a smile on our faces. In the end, the best view comes after the hardest climb, right? 🧗
Another important aspect of the trail, is that while you are making your way to Scorusu Waterfall, you will always be followed by the water's flow which is leading you to the destination. So whenever you feel like you need to take a break, always feel free to sit down on a rock and take a deep breath or just enjoy the wild landscape while you are eating blackberries found on the bushes at everyone's fingertips.
I remember I took this trip in the middle of the summer but since I made my first steps into the forest, the weather changed entirely. Every step done brings you closer to the waterfall which is welcoming you with the cold fresh air followed by the sound of the water which is slowly getting louder. After about 40 mins of climbing we get to a road which is splitting in two different paths - one of them following the water, the other one being an incredibly tilting surface. If you take this trip is necessary to know that the right path is the inclined area where you have to be very careful when you start walking as there are big risks to slip over. After we also cross this obstacle, among the trees can be discovered the waterfall which was calling for our adventurous kind. In the first moment we get stunned for a few mins, the waterfall seeming way bigger than 80 meters but as we get closer to it we realize that the flow of the water and the width is really huge creating a loud sound which gets right into your heart. This is the moment when we realize that after one hour of hiking those mountains, the Scorusu Waterfall is really worth being visited no matter how exhausting the trail is. As I said earlier, the best view comes after the hardest climb and this is just right. 🌄
