The Country of the Arakwal of Byron Bay

in #travelfeed5 years ago

Yesterday afternoon I showed my Mum a very special place here on the Eastcoast of Australia. We went to the Broken Head Beach south of Byron Bay to explore the Broken Head Nature Reserve. This stretch of land belongs to the Arakwal of Byron Bay who count themselves as one of the Bundjalung People who are the original custodians of the northern coast of New South Wales.

Broken Head Beach

The Broken Head Beach itself is actually worth a visit despite the 4 dollar per hour parking fee. But if you´re keen to walk a bit further you will get rewarded with spectacular views and one of the best beaches I´ve seen in a while.

The Three Sisters Track starts from a slightly overpriced parking lot, which leads past shady trees, steep cliffs and small rocky islands to the said beach.

The walking track isn´t that hard and with only 1.6km return easily done in less than an hour.

Most of them time you will walk in the shade of trees and big bushes, until you reach the top of that small headland. Looking back you will always see the beautiful Broken Head Beach and the Byron Bay Lighthouse in the distance.

From here on the track gets a bit more narrow and there are no handrails or bushes anymore to protect you from falling from the the cliffs. My Mum is scared of heights so I always had to walk on the outside of the path. 😁

Finally we reached a big lawn from where we had the perfect view on the Three Sisters Rock. There is a story about the rocks which you can read on the sign.

And just a few steps further there it is...the absolut most picturesque Beach I´ve seen in quite a while. From the viewing platform we had an incredible view over the actual Broken Head and the Kings Beach.

This is not only a beautiful secluded beach and awesome surfspot, it is also the "privat" Beach of Thor actor Chris Hemsworth who only lives a stone throw away from here.

Unfortunately we could not walk down the very steep steps to the beach since my Mum was too scared she would not get up again.

We will definitely come back on a nice sunny day and walk down the steps to the beach. But next time I bring my surfboard as the waves actually looked pretty good.
