You are one step ahead of me. That's what I ended up doing in there in Santiago, then Uruguay, then Buenos Aires. Most of my travel experience has been in cheaper second/third world countries where I can get a hotel for 10 dollars a night. In more expensive countries I quickly learned Airbnb is likely your best bet.
