RE: Travel Pro Answers #2: @Chefsteve Asks: How Do you Avoid Food Born Illness When Traveling?

So happy to help. Yeah Guatemala you've got to be very careful. I met like half a dozen guys from the states there saying they were puking their guts out after their "cultural experience" dining at the open air market in Lake Atitlan with the locals.

They all come excited to try the local food, then are sick and miserable for the next three days. Try the local food at the nicest restaurant you can find, pay double or triple in you have to, and you'll be fine. I'm not saying if you do not you will get sick 100%. I'm talking about playing the odds and taking chances.

To experience what I did in Ecuador on more than one occasion. I'd rather eat McDonalds for a week then take a 5% chance of experiencing that again. What I described in my article after eating that fish, I lost like 8lbs, fat,muscle..... I looked gaunt, weak. I literally thought I was dying. Took me a full weak to recover. Was terrible.

Anyway, thank you so much for kind words! So glad I could help and that we have connected on here! Wishing you the best trip possible. -Dan
