Asunción - the capital of PARAGUAY with European bars

in #travel7 years ago

Asunción has kind of surprised me. The only thing I've heard before about that place is that there isn't much to visit and I was about staying there for 3 nights. Also I was afraid there would be such a mess and chaos as it is in Ciudad del Este - the only Paraguayan city I had been to before.

When I was passing through some neighbourhoods by bus I saw there were places which seemed pretty unorganized. However the centre, where I also stayed by couchsurfing, was nice and I felt quite safe. Of course there was a mess, funny buses (you'll see on the pics) and the traffic was even worse than in Brazil. But the day after my arrival when I went for sightseeing, I wanted to check something on my map so I got inside the bar to take out my phone. Then I realized that nobody was doing that there - at least during the day. All the people were normally taking their phones out of the pocket on the streets... Without a fear. I would never say that something like this would surprise me - but apparently, Brazilian habits did change me a little bit.

Even though the city indeed has not much to offer in my personal opinion, it has nice, colonial atmosphere, also some of its parts are clean and organized. I tried local food, drank terere - a cold mate (finally! I can't imagine drinking regular, hot mate in these hot days). Sometimes I had problems to understand their Spanish as they mix it a lot with guarani language. I also realized it wasn't so cheap there as everybody was telling me. I mean, it was definitely cheaper than in Brazil, but most of the prices were comparable to Polish ones.

I decided to stay there only 2 nights in total, then go to Resistencia in Argentina, spend there 1 night, then follow my plan and go to Salta, and then Atacama in Chile. I had already found people to host me, and I didnt plan anything after Atacama as I wanted to stay there a bit longer and maybe work.

During last night we went to few bars- German one, British one, live music one... I felt so much home! One of the bars felt just like a mix of 2 bars in my hometown... After all of that we went to chill a bit on the beach by the river... I felt so much home! Would never think I would feel this way in Paraguay.

And next day, I departed for Resistencia...
