'The Observer'
Quite close to the very centre of the city there is a sculpture of August Šenoa. It is a relaxed portrait of the most prominent Croatia novelist from the 19th century. He is leaned to an old news-post and observes people passing by.
Someone put flowers around his neck. I really wonder who did that and why... Šenoa was writing in the time of realism but also wrote historical romance novels. An interesting mix that many followed and reworked in the following decades. There is his poem written on the post's surface.
His most known novel is "Goldsmith's Gold" about the love of a middle-class girl and a nobleman. Take time to read it if you're interested in the ways of old times.
I find the sculpture well placed. It is tastefully incorporated into surroundings. The statue lives with it, doesn't take anything away. On the contrary, it adds very much to the atmosphere. This is the view from the nearby Caffe. August is just casually standing there in the background.
Šenoa died from pneumonia when helping ordinary people cope with the consequences of the Grand Earthquake that hit Zagreb in 1880. He was a member of the parliament at the time. A respectful, capable man, given the honour to represent his people. Take a look at them today... Nobodies who crawled out of who knows where and make good business fooling people with piles of promises.
Enjoy your day! :-)

Hi @velimir, Great info and photography. I just googled this book and it seems it was translated into English only a couple of years ago. They have translated the title as THE GOLDSMITH'S TREASURE. I will be reading this in the near future and the author seems a very interesting and important character.
Wonder what the poem written on the pillar says.
Thank you. I am glad I stopped by after awhile to your blog.
Thank you for this info. The "treasure" doesn't cut it because the play of words was intended by the author. It is "Gold". It refers to his daughter. :)
The poem is about Zagreb.
Your photography never disappoints. I particularly love how you take your time to edit before you share with us.
Your theme is pretty unique too.
Honestly enjoying your blogs. Thank you for showing me other parts of the world through your lens, places many of us might never get the opportunity to travel to in our lifetime probably, but that doesn't take away from how amazing they are.
Please don't be shy with your photos, the more the better @velimir :)
