Since we were in Cancun, of course that we wanted to visit one the wonders of the world, “Chichen Itza - The Pyramid of Kukulcan” also known as “ El Castillo of Pyramid. ”It was listed as one of the "Seven New Wonders" of the world on July 7, 2007. The others are “ the Great Wall of China, the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, Christ Redeemer in Brazil, Machu Picchu in Peru, The Roman Colosseum in Italy The Taj Mahal, India."

We went there on the day 3 in Cancun. My husband pre-booked the day trip before heading there. It took around 2 hours from Cancun by vehicle. Once we got there, the driver had already arranged a tour guide to take us to the site of ancient city

Chichen Itza is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, alias "Quetzalcoatl city", is the most prosperous period of the classical Mayan city, known as "the hometown of quetzalcoatl". There is the ancient city ruins of the ancient Mayan culture and Thor Turk culture. The south of old Chichen Itza was founded in seven to tenth Century. There are Pyramids, Temple Court, the astronomical observatory and so on. The North part of novel Itza is famous for The Pyramid of Kukulcan and other ruins. The guide told us that his father's family continued the culture of Thor Turk, and his mother's family was pious of Mayan culture. He grew up under two cultures and was confused what customs to follow when growing up.

We also saw some lizards hidden in the stones!

There are not many surface rivers and lakes in the Yucatan Peninsula, but there are many natural underground pools or wells formed by the collapse of the rock layers. These underground pools are called cenotes. The Mayan tribes settled in this area relied on these underground cenotes. The Mayans would make sacrifices to their Gods at the famous Cenote of Sacrifice by throwing jade, pottery and incense into the cenote. Later generation can’t confirm if they also put human sacrifices in there, including young boys and girls.

The tour guide told us when he was here leading a tour last year, he heard a loud, rumbling sound and all of a sudden, a piece of the ground caved in near the woods which might be the formation of a new cenote. He worries that the whole city will be sunken one day.

The "Oval Observatory" ( El Caracol ) can observe the position of the equinox point of the day and night in the spring, the maximum north and south tilt of the moon, and other astronomical phenomena. The Mayans judged the arrival of the summer solstice and the winter solstice with the shadow of the sun shining on the Oval Observatory.

While looking at the observatory, our guide showed us a special kind of black stone that can be used to look at the sun or a solar eclipse!

The most spectacular view is the Pyramid of Kukulcan. With the design based on astronomy/stars, it stepped toward the north, south, east and west. Each side has ninety-one steps, plus the top of the platform, just three hundred and sixty-five steps, representing three hundred and sixty-five days a year. The number of steps and staircase platforms represent the number of days and months of the year. 52 carved slabs symbolize the 52 years of the Mayan calendar as a cycle of rebirth. Although the tour guide repeatedly explained how to calculate, I'm still confused. And we were also told that the mysterious cave in the bottom of the pyramid could possibly be connected to other caves or underground lakes!

I heard that there were two days of the year with the most spectacular scenic spots where when entering and leaving the Quetzalcoatl (The vernal and autumnal equinox ), you can see the sun shines on the north steps of the Pyramid, it forms the image of a snake, and as the sun moves, the reflection looks like a slowly moving snake, indicating the presence of Kukulkan (Quetzalcoatl Kukulcan) from heaven. So called "The Pyramid of Kukulcan."

A few years ago, people were allowed to climb to the top of the tower to watch the whole city, and then, because of the unexpected falling of tourists, we can now only watch it from a distance.

Great pictures. It a really special place. I was there years and years ago and was able to climb to the top of the pyramid. It provided a really amazing view of the entire site. Maybe someday they'll let people do it again.
