Workcation in BARCELONA - Part #1

in #travel7 years ago

After a rather cold and rainful summer in the Nordics it was time to pack my laptop and head somewhere sunny. I am now remote working in beautiful Barcelona the next couple of weeks and I thought I would share some travel tips and what to look for. Here we go:

Why Barcelona

Among all the European cities, Barcelona is by far my favorite for a variety of reasons:

  • Barcelona is the city that has it all: city, culture, shopping, food, sunny weather & beaches. No other cities comes close.
  • Barcelona has close proximity to almost every mid-sized airport in Europe with relatively cheap airfares.
  • Barcelona is relatively cheap compared to other European (big) cities and cost of living is low
  • Barcelona has amazing public transportation and moving around is a breeze
  • Barcelona has public wifi access and is filled with coffee shops and co-working spaces with high-speed internet
  • Barcelona has a lot of Universities, and few jobs -> That means a lot of young talented people are sitting around on wifi cafés daily, keen to collaborate and start up projects / initiatives

The thing I love the most about this city is the insane architectural wonders - there are hundreds if not thousands of buildings that are just absolutely gorgeous. The one above is the Segrada Familia which is - a hundred years later - still under construction, and probably will still be the coming decades.

This city attracts a lot of remote workers and passionate entrpreneurs. Here we are with some of my friends (who have yet to embrace the world of Steemit) on a local street food festival. That's another thing about Barcelona - there is always a public (and outdoor) event happening. The city is pulsing.

If there is anything I absolutely love about Barcelona, it is the abundance of rich, great tasting, cheap wine - Combined with the tapas, this is the best city to grab some late night dinner.

For an avid hiker like myself, the city has pretty much all you can want of trekking opportunities. The mountains range behind the city offers a variety of hikes, trails and parks - all open to the public and easy to find on Google Maps. Above is the view from Parc Del Guinardó, a 30 minutes hike for a normal fitness level.

Ok peeps, that's all for now. In the next post I will be sharing the best locations for co-working :-) Stay tuned !

Looks like you guys are/were having a blast!
Good thing I'm not too far away and have the opportunity to go fairly cheap and quick.

Let me know and I'll give you lots of tips :)

Looks like you guys had an amazing trip! You were both greatly missed in Stavanger. Can't wait for our workcation in January.

Nice! have fun, been a few times and would love to live there one day, looking into Dutch employers who can send me there.

Thanks Hass - I loving this city more and more, would love to hear your thoughts :)

Hi Marcus! I'm Susan. Great post. Your friend Yrja read my introductory post and said I should check out your blog, so here I am. Great tips on Barcelona. I met some DN folks in Ubud that said I need to head that way. It is on the list!

Hi Susan - thank you - how cool! @yrja is supercool! I did Ubud in June - it is absoutely amazing. In terms of Europe, yes, I think Barcelona ticks all the boxes for a DN like us. Where are you based now?

Hi Marcus! I am home right now until after the holidays - Washington State. I am planning on heading to Mexico next.. Tulum, Sayulita, or Merida. I left Bali on June 6. Were you at any co-working locations while in Ubud? I was at Outpost and stayed in one of their Villas.

Great post! Thanks for sharing :)) Exciiiited!

Yay! You would love (remote) working from here @yrja :)

I love Barcelona! That was my first solo trip. I love it's culture and atmosphere. I met a lot of fun people there. Enjoy.

Hey @beforeyoupack - let me know your tips from working here :)

I didn't work there. It was just as pleasure. Where are you staying?

I was in El Born the whole week - amazing place!
