This alpine lake is Greece’s largest one and the one on highest ground, as it lies on a 2,350 m. elevation on the massif bordering Albania. High altitude accounts for its frozen surface in winter time.
HOW: Access it by hiking from Grammos village which is situated on a 1,380 m. elevation, 39 km away from Eptachori village, Kastoria District.
MYTH: Once upon a time, a dragon lived in the village. Despite his dreadful appearance he was good-natured. However, the locals decided to throw him out of the village and so lead him far away on the Grammos massif. The dragon felt embittered at humans and asked to rest for a while on a higher location facing his beloved village. He then shed a tear which became the first Dragon Lake.
People remained untouched by the incident and continued pushing him away until they reached a place from where the dragon could see the village no more. Distressed about all this, the dragon shed yet another tear, a larger one this time, which formed the bigger Dragon Lake, further up and far away from the village!
