Australia travel part 3! Port Arthur, Tasmania

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

When I decided to plan my Legendary Australia trip, a huge part of my deciding factor on what cruise/when to book was based on returning to Port Arthur in Tasmania. Years ago, while working on a cruise ship out of Australia, I fell in love with the Port Arthur and the sail out past Cape Pillar. I was extremely excited to get a chance to return and explore again.

And it was just as beautiful as I remembered.

Port Arthur is a historical site only about 100km southeast of Hobart. It was an early Penal seattlement from the 19th century. The area is a great spot of wander and explore the period houses, as well as the ruins of the original penitentiary, asylum, and hospital.

Right off the short tender ride over from our ship, you are greeted by rolling green hills and your first glimpse of the ruins of the penitentiary and the old hospital building.

Port Arthur is a great place to spend the day wandering on a self guided tour. There are absolutely stunning sites at every turn. The area is also, not surprisingly, considered to be haunted. I have always been intrigued by the paranormal and have been involved in investigations in California and all around the USA. While out and wandering, our group decided to run my device called the Ovilus, which is said that spirits can manipulate to form words. While in one of the historic homes, the word ‘shoes’ came through right next to a display containing 2 pairs of shoes of previous residents. Take it however you’d like, but we found it kinda interesting!

One of the most stunning spots on the grounds is the Church. It towers in the distance from most areas around Port Arthur and is a beautiful spot to spend some time in awe of the beauty Port Arthur holds, even with the history that is full of convicts.

One of my favorite photos that I have ever taken.

The weather in Port Arthur is mild and made for a nice day enjoying the cool and rainy weather throughout the morning that gave way to sun in the afternoon.

We spent time exploring the asylum which gives visitors a glimpse into the lives of inmates who were considered mentally ill. Many were completely sane and normal people but the conditions they were subjected to would drive them to insanity. One of the most profound experiences in the asylum is the punishment cell in which the inmate would be subjected to for days at a time. When you enter the cell, and close the door, you are plunged into complete and utter darkness. You are unable to even see your hand in front of your face.

The penitentiary, hospital, and military barracks boast some of the most beautiful views in all Port Arthur, overlooking the rolling hills and water (with our ship in the background).

Port Arthur truly is a stunning location. It is a photographers paradise! Anyone with a love of history could easily spend days reading the stories of the locations. The beauty of the green grounds, colorful flowers, and rich reds of the buildings contrast against the pure blue skies with white clouds. It is a location that many have no idea exists but should be added to any traveler’s bucket list!

Stay tuned! Upcoming posts include Cape Pillar sail away from Port Arthur, Sydney overnight, Phillips Island (and the famous Penguin Parade), and The Great Ocean Road.

Thanks for following my adventures!

Thanks! It definitely is one of my favorite places I’ve been lucky enough to travel. It is just absolutely stunning. Tasmania is extremely underrated on so many travelers lists!

Would you believe I got to sing in the Sydney Opera House? I hate telling folks that, because it sounds so darn far-fetched...
