New Zealand Adventure - The End

in #travel3 years ago

I've finally made it to my last New Zealand post. The adventure is sadly over. :-(

Just writing up about my travels brought back so many memories and it's not until I look back, I realise just how much I saw and how much I did.

As I checked in to a staffless hostel near the airport I was in for arguably the most uncomfortable 3 nights of my life.

It seemed to be an old aircraft hanger? Pretty cool concept but the place felt dead. Everyone was just on their phone. No card games, no travel stories, not even a single drink to be seen. I've seen more interaction at a bus stop.

Here's the dorm where I slept

Looks pretty cool right? Modern, clean. You get your own pod complete with a fan and that all important plug socket to charge your phone.

Looks exactly like something you'd see on a Facebook advert.

But looks can be deceiving. I barely slept the next 3 nights. First off there's the curtain. A nice touch. More privacy makes for that all important darkness to get a good nights sleep. But this kept in all the heat and christ was it hot!

Luckily you get your own personal fan. I thought it would be add on to the air conditioning already blowing around the hallways. Nope. It was a loud fan which blew the hot air around...barely. I purpousely soaked myself with water and still didn't feel the air. How could such a loud fan be so weak?

So I had to keep the curtain open to actually be able to breathe. This presented another problem, lights. The room is never dark, there are small but bright bed lights that are always on and they are at eye level to the bed opposite.

I felt sweaty, sick and couldn't breathe. You can't open the window either. I've had better sleep on airplanes and I'm not kidding! One night I had to literally shower in the middle of the night to cool down.

So, since I didn't sleep I spent the nights looking back at my travels and figuring what to do.

Looking back, I've been to many places.

As you can seen see I had an incredible journey and I'm so glad I made the decision to go to New Zealand instead of heading home.

I'm also extremely thankful that I was actually able to go when I did. Now, thanks to the Corona virus it simply isn't possible.

Sadly this is the last I saw of New Zeland and what I thought was the end of my travels. It was time to book a flight home.

Or was it?...
