I've just been making travel plans for January and thought I'd outline them here to show you how much it cost. In total, to get from London to Philippines while visiting 5 countries in between, it will cost just £310 (roughly $400). Here's how:
UK to Czech Republic
So I'm starting off in London. I don't usually live there but I'm going home for Christmas & New Years to spend it with family. I decided to leave on January 4th because that was the cheapest flight in the first week of January. I booked with Ryanair as part of their Black Friday sale and the flight from London to Prague cost just £17. There was also a discount on luggage, which bought the total up to £29.
Flight from London to Prague = £17 + Luggage £12 = £29
Czech Republic to Germany
Next up is Berlin! Basically, we need to head in the direction of Copenhagen because that's where the next flight is booked from (but I'll get to that in a second). The cheapest and best option seemed to be Berlin. A bus direct from Prague to Berlin costs just €15 (£13.30) and takes 4 hours 30 mins. found on GoEuro.com
Bus from Prague to Berlin = £13.30 inc. baggage
Germany to Denmark
Copenhagen is a place I've always wanted to visit and now I'll finally getting the chance!
To get from Berlin to Copenhagen is an overnight bus and it costs just €18 (£16) each taking 8 hours (we booked it for overnight to save on accommodation).
Overnight bus from Berlin to Copenhagen = £16 inc. baggage
Denmark to Finland
I mentioned earlier that we need to head to Copenhagen for the next flight. That's because the most important place we plan on visiting in January is Helsinki.. and the cheapest flight to Helsinki is from Copenhagen. (The reason is that there is a travel conference there and we've been invited to attend).
So after booking the flight from Copenhagen to Helsinki, we just figured it out backwards from there. Hope that makes sense!
Here's where it gets interesting. The flight was meant to be £60 each. Instead, I used the American Express Points I got from opening a new account a few months ago to pay for it. So this flight cost us nothing! Anyone can do it - check it out here.
Flight from Copenhagen to Helsinki = £0
Finland to UAE
We'll be in Helsinki for a few days with the conference but will then be heading off to the other side of the world. I booked these flights a couple of weeks ago and this was the cheapest option I found to get to South East Asia - which is where we'll be based for the next few months.
Firstly, the flight from Helsinki to Dubai is £75.80 each and with baggage & handling fees it comes too £91.60. We take off at 6pm and land in Dubai at 3am. Our next connecting flight isn't until 11pm so that gives us a full day to explore Dubai (without paying for a hotel).
Flight from Helsinki to Dubai = £91.60 inc baggage & fees
UAE to Philippines
This is our final destination and what it was all leading towards! We'll be living in South East Asia for the next few months and the cheapest option on these dates was to fly to Manila in the Philippines.
We found the best choice was Cebu Air and it was actually a lot cheaper than I expected it to be!
Flight from Dubai to Manila = £161.33 inc baggage & fees
So let's recap! Here are all the flight/transport costs:
Flight from London to Prague = £29
Bus from Prague to Berlin = £13.30
Bus from Berlin to Copenhagen = £16
Flight from Copenhagen to Helsinki = £0
Flight from Helsinki to Dubai = £91.60
Flight from Dubai to Manila = £161.33
TOTAL: £311.23
To visit 6 countries & fly half way across the world.
That's not to mention that once in South East Asia then the local flights are incredibly cheap. With airlines like Cebu Air and Air Asia you can get flights for as low as $10, so there will be a lot more places to fly to as well!
Of course there are hostel & food costs in between but those can be kept minimal by using AirBnb, Hostelworld & eating from supermarkets. But that's a guide for another day!
I hope this helps some of you. I just wanted to show that travel can be very accessible, even when you're going to a silly amount of countries in a short period.
