Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic Sea - Secret Cave & Game of Thrones locations included...

in #travel7 years ago

Last year I had the luck to visit one of the most beautiful cities on our planet - Dubrovnik. This old city in the south of Croatia is called "The pearl of the Adriatic Sea" for a reason. Within minutes after our arriving we were bound by the magic the city transmissions. Just look at this picture.

You enter the old part town of the city by crossing a small drawbridge before going through the city walls main entrance.

The walls are actually one of the most fascinating parts about this wonderful town. It is just amazing how people could build such a architectonical wonder (The towers are up to 25 meters high!) hundreds of years ago. You even can visit the walls and talk a 2km walk around the whole town just using them. We didn't have to think a second before we decided that we couldn't miss out on that. If you are a student don't forget to show your ID - it gives you like a 90% discount. After a few steps we were on top of one of the best conserved fortress walls on this planet. The views the walls and towers had to offer were just stunning. But look for yourself.

If you have watched the hit series Game of Thrones you probably know this scenery from somewhere. The fortress you see in the background is called Lovrijenac and was used as a part of King's Landing.

But thats not all. On this picture you can see the old town and on the top right the island Lokrum (They also recorded some GoT scenes there). Just remember Lokrum for now - we will come back to that.

When you get thirsty while walking around the town walls I recommend to get some coffee or fresh orange juice at this little restaurant up on the walls. It is kinda pricy but the experience is definetly worth the money.

If you don't want to spend do much money you might as well just buy a bottle of water from one of the sellers on top of the walls.

After our walk on the cities walls we decided to go to Lokrum. And this turned out to be the best decision of our whole roadtrip. But before you get to see why, let us look at a picture from the walk to the towns small streets on our way down to the harbor.

The harbor is small but really beautiful. If you like to you can even book a trip on a boat which was originally used in Game of thrones. We did not do that though.

In the harbor it is really easy to get a trip to island and nature park Lokrum. The tickets for both ways were about 10€ per person. A fair price in my eyes. For your money you get the trip including some nice views of Dubrovnik from the ocean.

But if you think that I have already shown you the best part you are wrong. On Lokrum we decided to look for a nice spot to take a swim. What we found exceeded our expectations by a lot. After a little walk of about five minutes we found a wonderful cave.

Everything was perfect there. The water was clear as air in the woods. The only noises were the waves of the ocean. And the best part: We were completely alone. Yes, you heard right. In the middle of the main tourist seas we had a complete ocean cave for ourselves. Of course I could no withstand this opportunity and do some cliff-diving. This spot was just perfect for it.

When I say that I jumped around twenty times I am not exaggerating at all.

If you want to visit this magic place as well - I made a little map for you guys. Just follow the red line from the ship spot on Lokrum and you are there.

One more tip: Bring enough drinking water when going to Lokrum. Prices are high on the few bars of the island. Another fun thing about Lokrum: On the island there are many free living peacocks and rabbits.

So if you like animals thats an extra plus I suppose.

After a long day we went back to Dubrovnik and enjoyed a nice dinner at one of the harbors fine restaurants. It was pricy. But it was worth it. When we turned our backs on the old town I took one more picture. I guess I don't need to say more.
