Since my graduation, i have visited many Chinese cities. The most unforgettable place is Tibet.
Tibet, is a beautiful and mysterious place, a holy destination of prayers. I have always wanted to visit the Potala Palance, and the Himalayas, to see the Galsang flowers, to drink the highland barley wine, to taste the buttered tea. So I had a great opportunity to stay there for almost two years .
But Tibet is not a comfortable place to live in, because of altitude stress and awful sanitary conditions. Even the food must be cooked by high pressure cooker and it is unbelievably expensive.
And Tibet is so wide, you have to stay there for a long time, if you want to fully understand it. Even though, I stayed there for two years, I still haven't understood it very well.
As a part of China, Tibet has a unique culture of its own. It is mainly inhabited by Tibetans, a minority of old and mysterious people. The Tibetan traditional clothing consists of the loose waist, the long sleeves and long skirt. And the main religion in tibet is Lamaism. In Tibet, you will always be amazed by the artistic wonders, the architecture, the prayer-flages, sculptures and Thangkas, songs and dances, which are the representation of the Tibetan culture.

The Tibet's capital city is Lhasa. I lived there for two years, and for some times I even lived with a Tibetan family. I always hanged out at the Barkhor Square which is the biggest shopping market for small commodities, and drank coffee with friends or colleagues there.
The buttered tea and highland barley wine are the favorite drinks for tibetan people. The buttered tea is made of boiled brick tea and ghee.
Tsamba serves as a major food in Tibet and is eaten by the locals every day. It is made of parched flour which comes from dried and fried highland barley.
In Lhasa, the most famous building is The Potala Palace. The potala Palace is considered to be a model of Tibetan architecture. In 641, Songtsan Gambo, ruler of the Tubo Kingdom, had the Potala Palance built for Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty, his future bride.
The potala palace is divided into two sections--an outer section, the white palace, and an inner section, the red palace. The white palace consists of offices, dormitories, a buddhist official seminary and a printing house.
The red palace was constructed after the death of the Fifth DalaiLama. the center of the complicated Red palace is the soul-tower temples, a hall for worshipping Buddha, a scripture hall, Buddhist dormitories.
But the Sixth Dalai Lama was ousted, there wasn's his soul-tower temple in the potala palance. He was Tsangyang Gyatso, the prominent poet. "To live in the Potala Palace, I have to be the largest king of the snow area. Wandering on the streets of Lhasa, I am the best lover in the world. "When your fingers roll the 一prayer wheel of the Potala Palace smoothly, maybe you can feel his sadness.
Jokhang Temple is located on Barkhor Square, and is Tibet's first buddhist temple and is part of the Potala Palace. It is the ultimate destination for Tibetan pilgrims. Every day many tibetan pilgrims walk around the temple, rotating the prayer wheel.
Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, 8848.13m above the sea level. Snow-capped mountains, azur sky, golden rays of sunshine, the pure and myserious aura of Tibet has aroused the imagination of so many people of the world. The summit ridge of the mountain marks the border with Nepaland Tibet. As the supreme point of the world, the mountain top is covered with snow all the year long, and when the glaring sun comes out, the peak becomes very clear and beautiful. I only stayed at the base camp of Everest, and looked at the top of Everest in the distance.
The Namtso, or Lake Nam, is one of the three holy lakes in tibetan autonomous region and should not be missed as a travel spot. in Tibetan, Namtso means "Heavenly Lake", It is famous for its high altitude and imposing scenery. It took my colleagues about seven hours to reach it. We all lived in a yurt we rented. Then we dugged the drains around it by ourselves, because the owner told us it would have been raining. At that night, it really rained. And there was almost nothing to eat, besides the raw beef and the instant noodle soaked in unboiled water. But the sight of the lake surrounded by the distant snowy tops mountains can not describe the sanctity and peaceful atmosphere. There are Prayer flags and prayer stones along the Lake side. Yak is a kind of important livestocks of Namtso.
In the snowy region of tibet, one of the most exciting and attractive things is the traditional festival.
The Shoton Festival is the most popular. In Tibetan "雪“ is the meaning of yogurt and "顿”means party, so it means the eating yogurt festival. Now the Shoton Festival activities evolved into the Tibetan Opera Festival, so some people call it "the Tibetan Opera festival". It takes place from the end of June to early July. A very important activity is "Buddha Festival". It is always held at Drepung Monastery. The Lamaists unroll a large picture of Buddha on the slope of a mountain before the dawn. Since seven O'clock in the morning, the Tibetans and tourists go to the temple one after another. The sunshine shines on the picture of Buddha as the sun rises, accompanied by the flute. The Lamaists offer the buttered tea for free for visitors.
And in Tibet, another tradition is sky burial. The families take the dead body to a certain place and let the vultures eat it. They think that in this way the dead can reborn. We all didn't take any pictures of it, maybe scared, maybe awe by life.
In Tibet, life is hard, but that is real nature. You can really feel the life so fragile, but so tenacious, and the human is so tiny and the death is so close. Maybe this is why so many people want to go there to find themselves.
At last, I want to express how much i miss careness my foreign friend who I admire. I met him in Lhasa. I have not got any message from him since he went back to Canada for his cycling ride about three years ago, and now he is 77 years old. Take care, My dear friend Mr.Hutchisone.
I really enjoyed your post about Lhasa. Especially your photography. That first photo, the view of Lhasa with the Potala Palace, is breathtaking. It must have been fascinating to live there. Thankyou for posting. I got an insight into the city in a way you can't get from normal websites. I hope to visit Tibet one day.
warm regards,
