Walking through a corn maze

in #travel2 months ago (edited)

Something I have always wanted to do is visit a corn maze. Since moving to Virginia we have yet to explore many of the outdoor attractions. But figured a corn maze would be a great place to check out while they last. As Halloween approaches soon they will harvest these mazes and they will be gone, back to fields. But for a short time you can visit one and pay an entrance fee to go walk through them.

We found a place called Yoders Farm, they offered for $11 for adults to walk through the maze. So we drove out there to check it out.

The one we visited had two mazes, but we only walked through one part. Upon reaching the farm where the corn maze was. We could see the tall corn plants lining the property. With many acres filled with corn we were really looking forward to walking through them.

Lol I liked how they had to put up a sign saying "Please don't bring in weapons into the corn maze". I guess they had an "incident" at some point.. lol

It was a little windy when we entered the maze, honestly it added an effect to it hearing the corn stalks move around. Giving the whole feeling a bit of an eaery feeling.

I think there is an app you can download to track your progress through the maze. These signs are probably for that.

These are some tall stalks of corn probably a good eight feet tall. Much taller than me... lol

We kept finding some weeds growing along the paths, so we used a plant ID tool to ID it.. Appears to be some kind of nettle.

Walking through the maze we ran into dead ends a couple times. But I think we got lucky and mostly found the paths that led us through the maze pretty well.

Corn was still on the plants, so looks like they will harvest these soon. Not sure what kind of corn it is.. maybe animal feed corn or maybe corn for people.

Appears animals do eat them, we kept seeing half eaten corn. Sorry about my finger.. lol

It was still pretty early in the morning, so we had cover from the sun mostly along the path.

Eventually we found the exit, we had the option to explore the second half but I decided to just head out from there.

That was a lot of fun, I hear you can go through these places at night for a more spooky feeling.

The exit path from the maze was quite long.. Cool seeing that cut through the fields.

I exited the maze and headed out to see the rest of the farm.

Looks like they grow pumpkins too.

Such a classic country dirt road.. love it.

They had some farm animals too.. A few goats, cows, chicken and a rabbit. So that was cool.

I had a lot of fun exploring the corn maze and seeing the rest of the farm. Not sure if I am going to visit them again. Probably seen one I have seen them all.. lol But it was pretty cool and as soon as you entered the maze the feeling of being alone was quite strong. So go with someone else unless you are brave enough. As getting lost in a corn maze is better with two people and not one.. lol I hear you can call the farm if you get lost inside and they will come and find you. But luckily I did not need their help finding my way out on the paths. But I guess some do.

Maybe at night time its much easier to get lost, that could be an interesting visit in the future honestly. It would probably change the feeling of the place quite a bit walking through at night.

Maybe one day I will try the night time corn maze walk.

Here in Illinois they tend to theme the corn mazes. I've been in a corn cob shaped maze, a mastodon and even a tractor shaped one. Great fun.

99% sure that 'nettle' is lemon balm.
next to it: chicken groves.

Yoder's Farm!? That's a good solid Amish name right there. We have a good deal of Yoder's spread throughout the state here in Michigan. I was just down in Virginia last weekend. We traveled from my inlaws in Ohio down to Charlottesville, then from there over to Radford, and finally back over to Lynchburg before heading back to Ohio. It was beautiful countryside. I want to get back there when I have more time to explore. We will likely be heading back in the Spring to catch more Radford Softball.

Yep we got lots of Amish out here.. many came from up north down here to live.

Nice, Hope you had a good time visiting the state.

It was beautiful! I can't wait to go back again!

Congratulations you have been manual curated and upvoted by @ecency

thanks for the tour!! Been many years since I've been through a corn maze! My daughter is long gone and grown up, living in a different part of the country. Might have to abscond a couple kids to justify going through one again lol....

I love corn mazes, I try to go every couple of years to one not to far from here in Orange County. It looks like you had a good time, but I guess there was no smoking your weed while you wandered through! lol

Glad you had a good time!

Weapons to the Corn Maze? I guess it might be fun to have a blind shoot out... Not... :)

It's scary to get lost there at night. And the corn maze is so wide, it's a good thing they let you visit. And I know there are a lot of spiders in the corn maze, hehe

Hehe yeah it would be kind of scary I think.

I think we were not the first through the maze that morning, otherwise yeah probably have to clear spider webs using a stick

Looks like the movie Interstellar 😁

Hehe yeah lots of corn there too.

What fun!!!! Thanks for sharing, @solominer!

Using a cornfield to create a maze is truly a brilliant idea.
By the way, what if someone gets lost in the corn maze and can’t find their way out all day?

In our city, Shenyang, there’s also a scenic spot made from rice paddies, which is quite similar in concept to the corn maze.

Wow! That is some amazing artwork they did in the rice fields. Looks like they have a train driving through the fields and a board walk. That would be a really cool visit.

Thanks for sharing that.

You are welcome!

For $11, it's a lot of fun to walk through a corn maze. It's actually a big cornfield. There are a lot of pumpkins growing for the upcoming Halloween season.

Yeah it was a pretty good deal I think.

That sounds so fun! 😄
Did you make it all the way through the maze, or did it get tricky in the twists and turns?

Yeah we did in under 30 minutes. I think we got lucky. Only had to turn back a few times to find our way through it.

It's very interesting to explore, but it's a bit scary if you go alone. Especially since the corn trees look very tall.

Hah yeah.. also go with a buddy.

Wow, so interesting and awesome.

thanks much

Haha, corn mazes remind me of those science fiction movies full of suspense and aliens. If I remember correctly, my first experience with this was the movie "Signs". I was very young, and it made me nervous!

Hah yeah.. that is true.. did have that feeling.

Me too.. that was kind of scary.

We also grow maize, it is a good crop. In this season, we made a good profit.

Oh nice.. we stick to garlic.

This place really looks fantastic. A great way to recharge your batteries! I didn't know there were mazes in the cornfields, much less that they charged for them... It must have been a fun experience!

Indeed it was a lot of fun visiting such a place.

Your writing really invites the reader to experience the adventure of the corn maze! The descriptions of the towering corn leaves, the wind blowing through the stalks, and the feeling of being alone in the middle of the path create vivid images and a bit of an adrenaline rush. I also love how you share small moments like the sign that says "please don't bring weapons into the corn maze"... it's humorous but gives the impression that the place was thoughtfully prepared.

The instructions about weeds, dead-end paths, and even the animals that nibble on the corn further enrich the narrative and draw us along. Bravo to the photos, which support your story with each step. I hope you can repeat the experience again, and we, the readers, want to join in!

It was quite the cool experience. I really had fun there.
