Hello! I studied abroad in the UK and it was my first time in Europe and my first time travelling solo. Here are a few things I learned on my journey over here from Texas to London:
1. Whenever possible, fly non-stop or direct, ESPECIALLY if you are on a set schedule and don't have much free time.
It’ll be less stressful… trust me. (My first flight from Austin to Houston was delayed and that caused me to miss my flight from Houston to London.)
2. Just tell the truth when going through customs.
I was told to say that I was coming to London on holiday because if you tell them you’re studying they’ll ask you a bunch of questions. So I did what I was told and the lady still asked me a bunch of questions! Always tell the truth because WWJD? I’ll tell you what Jesus would do He’d tell the truth and avoid all of those extra questions! ;)
3. Be comfortable and bring a four-wheeled suit case.
You’ll probably be doing a lot of walking and the four wheeled suit cases are so much easier to move around with.
4. Print out the directions to where you’re trying to go beforehand.
When technology fails, it’s always a good idea to know exactly where you’re going. Some Londoners can be really busy and when it comes to helping you find your way, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”
5. Don’t psych yourself out.
If you’re thinking of going abroad to London or anywhere unfamiliar you might feel a little intimidated. Just go with the flow and enjoy your adventure. Even the unexpected things that seem like problems at first will turn into great stories. Just use your common sense and you’ll be fine!
