Such a fine sight to see
Standin' on the corner park opened in 1999 to honor the song 'Take it Easy' written by Jackson Brown and Glenn Fry of the Eagles. The statue stands on the corner of N. Kinsley Ave and Old Hwy 66 of the infamous Route 66.
Though the scene is iconic, there's more going on here than meets the eye. First, the brick wall, painted to resemble a scene from the era when 'Take it Easy' was first written is just that, a wall. Beyond the facade is a grassy park area constructed after the building itself burned. Only this one wall remains. A testament to life in Winslow, the bricks of this wall are dedicated by locals who donated to its construction. Each brick features the sponsor's name and a story highlighting their fondness for their beloved town.
In the 2006, along with the iconic man and his guitar, a statue in the likeness of Glenn Fry was erected to honor his passing. Glenn and the man are joined by another feature from the hit, the 'flatbed Ford' sits waiting nearby, as though it just slowed to take a long look at the scene.
One of the great site seeing stops along Route 66, Standin' on the Corner park is a unique place to stop and appreciate small towns that still thrive in the American southwest. While you're visiting, an old fashion soda shop called Sipp's sits directly across from 'the Corner' for a retro-chic afternoon treat.
This will always be one of my favorite quirky stops in the US.
Note of interest: This is where Short Round, the bag featured in the above image and subject of this page was reborn. Only blocks away, an outdoor outfitter and friend repaired and reconstructed a tattered Jansport backpack into a companion any traveler would be happy to have.
Cool. Looking forward to seeing your travels
Awesome, come along on the ride! The next stop is a real winner (hopefully).
