Roopkund Lake:Where skeletons Reside
We have been surprised by zombies or walking deads in movies but imagine going to a waterbody and finding skeletons in real life. Not one or two but skeletons of almost 200 people! The Skeleton Lake or Roopkund Lake is a high altitude glacial lake at an elevation of 16,499 feet in Uttarakhand state of India.
This lake is famous for the hundreds of human skeletons(approx 200) that can be found at the edge and bottom of the lake once the snow melts. The lake is nestled in Himalayas and is a popular trekking destination.First discovered by Nanda Devi game reserve ranger H K Madhwal a forest guard in 1942.He discovered a few of the skeletons at the bottom of the lake while it was frozen. With the onset of summer the frozen lake melted, more skeletons were revealed in the lake, and around the lake’s edges. It is believed that the skeletons number around 300.
The skeletons were a mystery until recent when a group of researchers concluded the skeletons belonged to 9th century people. These people were mostly pilgrims and locals who died due to a fatal blow on the head and not due to any wound by weapons or avalanche or landslides. Also the remains consisted of more than just bones. The altitude and cold temperatures, preserved flesh, nails, and hair as well. Also things like iron spearheads, leather slippers, wooden artifacts and jewelry were discovered.
Oxford University's Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit conducted radiocarbon dating on the remains and concluded that the skeletons date back to around 850 AD.Also there were no injury marks elsewhere on the body. It is believed that these were travelers travelling. But what caused their death is still unknown. The cause for the mysterious death is now widely considered to be a result of hailstorms....But well it is just a theory just like many for GoT..The mystery surrounding the lake still looms at large.

this place is situated in uttarakhand glaciers where the people worship godess durga and perform rituals in every 12 years i.e in the memory of the godess and perform a trek. whole of the year it is blocked due to heavy rains, ice and its route not so easy. Even if you observe the bones the size of bones are twice in length of the bones of people living in this era......If you really wanna observe that go to that place and feel the difference spirituality..
Well yeah you're right but there's not just Durga the people worship! Thanks for dropping by!Do check out the new posts as well! You'll sure as hell love em! :)
