After visiting Tulum I headed south, to a large archeological site named Kohunlich. It's about 3,5 hours drive from Tulum, so I had plenty of time to watch a "real" Mexico behind the bus glass.
The site of Kohunlich is surrounded by dense sub-tropical rainforest, so it's very humid there. I remember that when I got off the bus I was very impressed by the size of the forest, I have never seen a real jungle before !
In the parking the local dog joined our group and he "escorts" us all over the place ;)
"Come on, I'll show you the way"
After about 10 minutes walk we entered a big, green plaza with monuments all over. The ancient city was built by 200 B.C. and it was planned as a complex with pyramids, citadels, temples with a channel drainage into a system of cisterns and an enormous reservoir to collect rainwater.
The main attraction on the site is The Temple of the Masks, it's the oldest structure in Kohunlich. It was built around 500 A.D. for the honour of the Sun God. The central stairway of pyramid is flanked by huge humanized stucco masks.
Many ruins are literally eaten by the rainforest
And that's it for today, in the next part we will go to Campeche state and it's attractions.
