Whimsy & Magic in a Make Believe Castle: Budapest, Hungary

Vajdahunyad Castle, like a Disney princess movie, is smoke and mirrors. Located in Budapest's City Park the castle is a facade built in 1896 among a collection of facades celebrating Hungarian Architecture.

I visited in Autumn when golden light and turning leaves spun magic.

Before I knew anything about taking photographs I snapped and snapped with my little automatic camera. So mesmerised was I by both the absurdity of something so beautiful but completely useless and the aptness of a princess life that was nothing but illusion. Thankfully Photoshop and Lightroom rescued my tourist clicks into something slightly salvageable.

Now I would create more space, slow the exposure, catch the full reflection of that magnificent Autumn colour in the water. I wouldn't blow out the highlights in the sky.

I took up photography for the sole purpose of returning to this city to do it justice. Budapest is a place of whimsy. It stole my heart and set me on a path that opened up my world through a lens armed with pen and paper. You haven't seen a city lit with wonder until you've walked the shore of the Danube on a dusty cool Autumn evening and looked across the shimmering water at Castle Hill.

That light is quite special. I have to get to Hungary one day. Such a long list of places to go ....

Ha ha yes the world is full of special places. This is not good for my bank balance. But very good for my soul.

Beautiful light!

Thanks Cam. It is the work of Lightroom saving the glary overblown sky.

This looks magical! I absolutely love Budapest, such an amazing city

Isn't it fantastic. My absolute favourite place in the world - so far.

It looks really great, Kylie. I must admit I haven't so far been to Budapest though it's only 1,200 kilometres away from here and we've even got some family members living in Hungary.

Oh do go! It is wonderful!

Autumn looks quite dramatic in this pic....

The only time i've been to Buda was in winter...I like the old soviet style apartment blocks, abandoned buildings from the 70s too. Have u got any of those character-free buildings captured? Blocks of high rise, square in shape, lot of glass windows...u know that look. It makes your stomach churn. I don't know why!
Here's an example. I don't know if it's an appropriate context...it takes away the romance from autumn leaves....but u could possible make them look different if u get a chance to shoot em! will be nice to shoot people in the foreground of these buildings!

I saw those buildings. I didn't photograph them though. In Budapest I immersed myself in the stories and experiences of communist occupation. The reverence I have for the pain and suffering made it more an internal experience than something I wanted to photograph.
