Surprisingly Good
Yesterday we took @little-ricky to Disneyland for the first time since he has really been aware enough to appreciate it. Personally, I am not a big fan because #1, I am apparently rapidly becoming a grumpy old man, #2 because it pisses me off the way these theme parks charge so much and nickel and dime you for everything. I don't feel like getting wound up here, so I will just stick to the positives of the experience for the purposes of this post!

After walking around the park for awhile letting Ricky ride on as many rides as we could, we came across the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge section of the park. It is dubbed as a 14-acre area that immerses guests in the Star Wars universe. I can't argue with that point, because I immediately commented to @afturner that I was impressed by the level of attention to detail.
As you can see in the above image, the Millennium Falcon was docked outside near a ride, but was unavailable to board itself. Too bad we couldn't go for a ride as it was being refueled. Perhaps we can try again next time!

We ended up spending a good portion of the day just walking around the Star Wars section. Ricky got to meet Chewbacca and really had a blast! He didn't know what to think about stepping into this other worldly environment. All of the little details helped to sell the illusion, such as the old damaged paint on the railings and glitchy sound effects and people walking around dressed as 'locals'.
Even the 'street vendors' were completely in costume. I like it when they actually put the effort in to make the costumes look convincing. Especially at the extortionate prices you pay to get in! But I again digress.

The factory where you can build your own droid was super cool. I didn't read everything about it, but it seems that you go in, pick a droid type that you want to build and then collect all of the parts from the conveyor belt. There is a station where you can take the parts and use what looked like above head pull down screwdrivers driven by compressed air to assemble your parts.

I could see that this would be really fun for the kids. I might let my little one have a go at it when he gets a little bit bigger.

@little-ricky was quite fascinated by this green R2-D2 like droid. He was standing there looking at it when it all of the sudden lit up and started looking around while making noises. He jumped about a foot back and started to laugh.

I felt like you could easily film Star Wars scenes in this location. Everything looks really authentic, at least to my eye. Even where it's not perfect you could simply do shallower depth of field shots to slightly soften the background. But to be honest, in many cases you wouldn't even need to. I would not be surprised if I found out that they did some shots for actual films here.

I always laugh a little bit when I look at the condition some of the ships are in. I try to imagine a universe where people would feel OK exposing themselves to the extremely deadly elements of space in a rickety old junker. I mean, you don't mind as mind driving around in an old piece of crap car because if it breaks down you can at least just step out of it and walk away. In space, a leak or a dead engine would mean certain death, don't you think?
Luckily by the time we got to the end of the day, Ricky was starting to get exhausted. Unfortunately I unintentionally caused a little bit of a scene while leaving the park.

As we were walking through the exit, My 4 year old waist height son got mad at me because he didn't want me to hold his hand. He decided to ball up his fist and turn around with full force and punch me directly in the family jewels. He hit me so hard, and just right that I buckled over and yelled out "AHHHHH!"
I had hold of his metal water bottle suddenly got so angry that I slammed the water bottle to the ground breaking it open and spraying water everywhere. After the pain wore off, I stood up to find 4 security guards standing about 10 feet away looking at me, while @afturner was telling off @little-ricky for hitting me. He kept saying "What's wrong with daddy?"
I stood up, dusted off my shorts and turned around to the security officers and said, "I am so sorry about that. My son just punched me full force in the nuts."
The security guys just started laughing and said that they had seen the whole thing and were just worried I wasn't alright. Apart from that little incident, it turned out to be a pretty great day! I am sure I'll be posting more later, as we still have 2 more days on our 3 day pass. Hopefully Amanda will spread them out a bit!
The level of detail of the attractions and all its parts is excellent, incredible, an excellent experience.
The details are really what make it worthwhile. I see a lot of low effort attractions at theme parks, but this is not one of them. Definitely worth a visit!
Hey, hope all is well.
Just thought I'd let you know it's a lot better using the swap feature for zing as we incentivize the pool with rewards there is a lot more volume there. It costs 0.25% to swap but your recent trades would've netted you more zing per hive for instance. I know it's not a lot just thought you'd know for future trades in or out of zing!
Noticed the recent price change and saw your user name in the dex so thought I'd leave a message!
Oh cool. Thanks for the info man! I will try that next time.
Greetings @nuthman ,
What a wonderful way to spend the day....immersed in Star Wars.
Very happy for your son to have seen R2-D2 like droid.
Thank you!
Kind Regards,
Bleujay
He had a great day, and the best part is that he went right to sleep when we got home. That is always a bonus!
looks like a tour into nostalgia and the nut shot was part of the trip haha
It seems like it's never a day out if my son doesn't punch me in the nuts!
haha he is trying to make sure he has no more siblings
It would sure seem that way
Most of the locations are augmented anyways, so it wouldn't be bad to film in a place like this while adding a little tech to make it even better. The only problem is that it might not be big enough to film some scenes, but it's a very good place to film. The droids looks very real and the places to build stuffs looks very cool.
Yeah, I think you'd have to do some clever shots. I did watch a documentary not long ago show how a lot of the shots from the Mandalorian were filmed in a room with a giant surround movie screen in the background with the locations displaying on it. It's kind of crazy how technology has advanced!
Great family day despite the exit. Good to see a post from the nuthman /
Thanks! Yeah I could have done without the grand finale for sure!
Oh such a beautiful place to visit. Little Ricky doesn't want you to hold his hands because he's now a big boy😃😃
That is a fact... He is a little escape artist too, you have to hold the hand tight!
wow - finally a post from you! 'Little' Ricky is not that litle anymore! They grow fast! Teach him martial arts, armwrestling and such (like I did once with my sons) and before long, he will beat you in all disciplines!
Enjoy those times you have now! Great photos 😍
Finally a post, I know! I have been so busy with family and work I rarely find the time anymore. Every time I think things are going to calm down, I get another big work project. I guess I can't complain, it pays the bills!
Yeah, we want to get him into something to burn up some energy and teach him a bit of discipline. He is getting a bit out of control at the moment.
"Ricky got to meet Chewbacca and really had a blast!"
Good thing he didn't hit Chewy in the nuts, lol 😉
That would have went very poorly! haha. He was a little bit scared of Chewy so I wasn't too worried about it.
good to hear from you - it had been some time, but I knew you were around because you upvote my stuff. I don't post that often either, sometimes weeks go by. This is because regardless of how many I reach with it, I aim to post quality content, not just like some with a 'hit and run' one pic and one line.
Same here, I would rather not post anything than just spam the blockchain. A lot of times I just don't have much new to say that I think would be interesting to anyone.
Kids dream
Yeah, he really loved it.
Sorry I missed this post. That is really cool and one of the only things I miss about living in a major country. We don't really have stuff like that over here although Japan has a Disney and Singapore has a Universal Studios. Just like you would expect and I am sure it is the same in Cali, these places are wildly expensive .
Easy to miss. Haha, I haven't been very active on here the last few months. Busy with 'dad life'.
We have annual passes to so many of these things now. Coincidentally, just today we went to "Legoland" which my son absolutely loves. This summer has been killer though and I am NOT doing well with the heat. I can't even imagine how it's been on your side of the world.
And yes - you are right. The cost is so bad. I literally get angry at how they exploit people. You really want to take your kids and give them a good time, but come on man. Do they really have to charge so much? And of course the insult to injury, absurd parking fees on top of the insane ticket fee.
Even though I am in my 40's I still really love Lego. Even though I don't collect "stuff" and I think Lego is overpriced as hell, on the escalator up to bowling I eye up the Lego Star Wars section every single week. An X-wing is like $70 though and that is just outrageous in my mind. Were they that expensive when we were kinds? If so I can't really imagine my rather stingy parents guying it.
How much was the parking. It's Cali, so I am gonna guess more than $40
I think it actually cost exactly $40. I might be thinking of Knott's Berry Farm though, another park we go to. YES! Lego are insanely overpriced and they are super stingy with the amount of pieces they give you. I actually was about to 3d print a giant bucket of legos for my kid. He is getting tired of running out constantly when trying to build anything.
I really don't think so. And if they were, they sure gave a lot more pieces. I remember having a huge box of them and never seemed to run out. I also bought my son a rather large metal pail of Lincoln Logs which I was really dissapointed to see when I opened it that the pail was mostly empty. How much can it possibly cost to fill a can with cheap wood?
I don't recall if they were expensive or not but I'm gonna guess that they probably weren't because my family was not wealthy but yet we had a lot of them. here in Vietnam they are prohibitively expensive. That small x-wing? I went back to double-check and yes, it was $60.
No chance my family would have paid anything near that much. I think Lego maybe re-branded themselves and realized that the demand was large enough that they could charge more at the expense of selling fewer units yet still make more money in the process. It's not like they have any competition.
Wow! $60 is bad enough here, but I don't even know who their target audience is in Vietnam at that price. I know Asian people are a lot more frugal.
I actually recently 3d printed a few lego clone bricks for my kid, and they work fine when connected to real ones. I think I might print a big bucket of them. Will cost very little to print in resin, and a little bit of time to clean them but not bad. On the last batch I used some resin that was a little brittle, but now I have this really hard plastic stuff that can bend a lot without breaking.
that would be wild if that worked. that must be a game-changer for the people that do custom builds. decades ago an engineer friend of mine had to scour the internet looking for various pieces in order to build a custom Star Wars Star Destroyer. It was about 5 feet long and took him over a year to find all the pieces. I didn't ask how much it cost but I am sure it was a lot.
This was such a fun read;) The whole day sounded like a mix of magic and mayhem.... perfect memory material. @nuthman I’ve been trying to contact you on discord. If it’s possible, can we talk? I really needed some help which seems quite urgent. Please 🙏
