Common guys, everyone is going to Amsterdam (Yes I have been there too), but in this post, I want to talk about another city I fell in love with during my time in the Netherlands: Utrecht. I really want to share some of photos with you and a few must-know facts about this little place.
Utrecht actually used to be the main city of the Netherlands until the Dutch Golden Age when it became surpassed by Amsterdam which now the highlight of the country. Utrecht is a growing municipality and projections are that the city's population will surpass 392,000 by 2025. Utrecht's ancient city centre features many buildings and structures several dating as far back as the High Middle Ages. It has been the religious centre of the Netherlands since the 8th century. In 2013, the largest religion is Christianity with 28% of the population is Christian, followed by Islam with 9,5% and Hinduism with 0,8%.
Utrecht's cityscape is dominated by the Dom Tower, the tallest belfry in the Netherlands and originally part of the Cathedral of Saint Martin. There is some trouble brewing due to this historic gem, as many contractors cannot design and build anything that surpasses the Tower. Of course, similarly to other parts of the Netherlands, 33% of journeys within the charming little city are by bicycle and as a result the city has an extensive network of cycle paths that runs through and through.
Being in the city, I was surrounded by only good vibes. I found the people utterly relaxed and pleasant. Everyone was polite and always ready to lend a helping hand. I really enjoyed my stay and hope some of my photos will encourage others to go and take a look for themselves:
That wraps up this photo journey. Amsterdam is absolutely breathtaking as well, but the next time you venture to the Netherlands, make sure you catch a glimpse of this city. Hope my photos did their job to convince you.
