  Jokulsarlon Lake in Iceland

Iceland is fast becoming one of Europe’s most famous travel destinations and that is for a good reason. There are absolutely so many interesting places to visit in Iceland and one of these is the Jokulsarlon Lake.

Located in the southeastern part of the country, this ice lagoon tops the list of Iceland’s most popular attractions because of its immense beauty.

 Natural Crown Jewels

The Jokulsarlon Lake is among the natural crown jewels of Iceland. Located right beside the Vatnajokull, which is the largest glacier in Europe, the blue waters of the lagoon are breathtakingly dotted with icebergs coming from the surrounding glaciers.

Jokulsarlon forms part of the Vatnajokull National Park ( Vatnajökull N.P ) and is characterized by spectacular glacier tongues, incredible lava landscape, and majestic rugged highlands. Thousands of people would flock to the lagoon all year round to witness its outstanding beauty.

Formed naturally as a result of the melted water that comes from the glacier, the lake is getting bigger and bigger each year and is looking even more amazing since massive blocks of ice would come crumbling towards the lagoon coming from the ever decreasing glacier.

Wildlife at Jokulsarlon Lake

Another reason why many people would flock to the Jokulsarlon Lake is to witness its one of a kind wildlife. Plenty of seals can be seen swimming at the lagoon and by its coastline. Others can be seen relaxing above an iceberg that’s floating in the lagoon, which is a joy to watch. Since Iceland is full of bird life, most especially during the summer, you’ll also see plenty of birds at the Jokulsarlon Lake.

Although you will not see any puffins in the area when driving from Reykjavík towards the Jokulsarlon , you can drop by at the Reynisfjara beach and Dyrhólaey lighthouse to catch a glimpse of some puffins.

Driving along the south coast going to Jokulsarlon Lake is an exciting experience in itself. The views are absolutely beautiful, a scene that you can never find anywhere else on Earth.

Popular Film Location

Some of Hollywood’s blockbuster movies have been shot in Iceland and some of the scenes have the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon in the background. This unique landscape has attracted various filmmakers from around the world and would come here to shoot most especially during summer when the weather is quite warm but the surrounding looks cold.

Some of the most popular films that were shot here "James Bond movies",

01. " A View to a Kill"

02  "Die another Day"

 Other movies

lara croft tomb raider was also filmed at the breathtaking lagoon, while Interstellar and Batman Begins were shot at the nearby glacier. If you are a big fan of these films, then that’s another good reason for visiting the place.

You can choose to book a tour going to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lake or you can rent a car and drive from Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital city. It will be a 5 to 6-hour drive, yet the scenic view will make the experience really worth it.

So if you are planning a trip to Europe soon, make sure you include the Jokulsarlon Lake in Iceland in your itinerary.
