What's Lapu-Lapu City as a Historic Place?

Lapu-Lapu City is an Island of Cebu and already a Highly Urbanized City, it is administratively independent interms of government but still grouped of Cebu Province. It was formerly known as Opon and became Lapu-Lapu City. Many historical events happened in this place for it was called as a Historic Resort City. To go deeper, let me have a brief discussion about its history.

History.

Way back on the 16th century, Mactan Island (known as Opon ago and Lapu-Lapu City in this present time) were colonized by Spaniards. It was discovered by the Augustinian friars on 1760 and became a City of Cebu in year 1961.

✎ April 27, 1521
A bloody war happened in the Island of Mactan between the foreign explorer and tribe warriors, wherein many have been killed including Ferdinand Magellan leader of the foreign grouped. He was defeated after fighting the native chieftain of Mactan, Datu Lapu-Lapu, that's why in this present era, it is already called Lapu-Lapu City after the brave fighter effortly vanished the foreign invaders inorder to save the Island.

It serves as his honor upon saving the Island from the infringers.

Pascual dela Serna was chosen to become the municipal president of Opon during its first election.

✎ December, 1941
Japanese invaded the town due to its wealth in oil tanks after the outburst of the World War 2. Infact, they succeeded upon raiding estimatedly fourteen oil tanks of the town.

✎ December 31, 1961
Congressman Manuel A. Zosa sponsored the Bill (Republic Act 3134; known as the City Charter of Lapu-Lapu signed by Carlos P. Garcia, President during this time) for converting the municipality of Opon to become at its present name, Lapu-Lapu City. It was then initiated with Mayor Marion Dimataga to be the first Mayor in the City.

Ferdinand Marcos announced the place of the battle a national shrine; where supervison and preserving of the place is highly enforced as a memorable event happened in history.

The supervision of this site were governed by the National Historical Commission and Department of Tourism.

Due to the boom of the City, many infastructures and companies were built interms of industrial aspects. As years goes by, it continuously grows and become wealthy City up to this present juncture.

Lapu-Lapu City is composed of 30 barangays including the small Island of Olango. The followings are:
