Everything was still fine on the return flight from Split, Croatia. As you can see in the picture, a beautiful sunset over the clouds on the way to Frankfurt International Airport, before continuing my journey home from @hivefest. After about two hours of flying from Split, I arrived in Frankfurt and immediately turned on my mobile data to check if there was a good train home. Unfortunately, I was quickly disappointed when I saw in the app that what usually takes me around 3 to 4 hours to get home would now take over 8 to 12 hours.
I asked my brother @rivalzzz, "What do we do now? What are our options?" Staying overnight at a hotel at the airport? Expensive, and we just wanted to get home. A flight to Munich and then continuing from there? Absolutely crazy. Flixbus? The bus wasn’t leaving until 3 AM, so we’d have to wait another 5 hours at the airport... not an option in this case.
All the options seemed hopeless, except for one… We decided to rent a car at the airport and drive home. So we briefly considered it and headed to the counter of a car rental company, whose name I won’t mention here. Once at the counter, I asked for the cheapest option to get to my hometown. That turned out to be about €350 for a day’s rental. I sighed deeply but agreed, just to have a way to get home. With the deposit, the total amount charged to my credit card was about €650.
Shortly afterward, we received instructions on where to find the car. After a while, we arrived at the parking lot, inspected the car, and took some photos. The garages are quite cramped, with hardly enough space to take proper pictures… Anyway, we packed our luggage into the car and hit the highway, heading home.
Beim Rückflug von Split, in Kroatien war noch alles in Ordnung. Wie ihr am Bild sehen könnt, ein bezaubernder Sonnenuntergang über den Wolken in Richtung Frankfurt Internation Airport um danach meine Heimreise vom @hivefest fortzusezten. Nach ca. 2 Stunden Flug von Split in Frankfurt angekommen, habe ich dann mal direkt meine mobilen Daten wieder eingeschaltet um zu schauen, ob man einen guten Zug nach Hause bekommt. Leider wurde ich dann sehr schnell enttäuscht und musste mir in der App ansehen, das ich normalerweise knapp 3 bis 4 Stunden nach Hause brauche, nun aber über 8 bis 12 Stunden brauchen würde... Ich fragte meinen Bruder @rivalzzz... was machen wir nun? Was sind unsere Optionen? Hotel Übernachtung am Airport... Teuer und wir wollen nach Hause... Einen Flug nach München und dann weiter? ... Absolute spinnerei. Flixbus? Der Bus würde erst um 3 Uhr nachts losfahren also noch 5 Stunden am Airport warten... das war auch keine Option in diesem Fall. Alle Optionen schienen Auswegslos bis auf eine... Wir mieten uns ein Fahrzeug am Flughafen und fahren mit dem Auto nach Hause. Also haben wir kurz überlegt und sind dann zum Schalter eines Fahrzeugsvermieters, welchen Namen ich hier nicht nennen möchte. Am Schalter angekommen fragte ich nach der kostengünstigsten Option um zu meinem Heimatort zu gelangen... Das war dann ca. 350€ Miete am Tag. Ich schluchtze tief und willgte dann ein um endlich eine Option zu haben, um nach Hause zu kommen. Mit der Kaution war der Gesamtbetrag dann bei ca. 650€ die auf meiner Kreditkarte belastet wurde. Kurze Zeit später haben wir dann auch direkt die Anweisungen erhalten, wo wir das Fahrzeug finden. Nach einer Weile sind wir dann am Parkplatz angekommen und haben das Fahrzeug begutachtet sowie Fotos vom Fahrzeug gemacht. In den Garagen ist es ziemlich eng und kaum großartig Platz vernünftig Fotos zu machen... Wie dem auch sei. Also, Gepäck ab ins Auto und ab auf die Autobahn Richtung Heimat.
Shortly after, we were already on the highway... We drove for a little while until suddenly, the steering and speed were significantly reduced. The car started behaving strangely at 160 km/h, so I immediately pulled over at the nearest rest stop. And lo and behold... the front right tire had blown out! Just what we needed... After a long time in Split, all we wanted was to get home :(
So, I called the car rental company and explained the situation. About 25 minutes later, the ADAC (German roadside assistance) arrived, loaded the car onto their truck, and took us to a nearby workshop. Once we arrived, the car was unloaded, and we went into the office to explain the details. Thankfully, they kindly gave us a rental car through the ADAC Club, and just after midnight, we were able to continue our journey home.
Kurze Zeit später sind wir dann schon auf der Autobahn angekommen... Wir fuhren dann eine kleine Weile bis irgendwann die Lenkung und Geschwindigkeit enorm gedrosselt wurde... Das Fahrzeug hat sich auf einmal bei 160 km/h sehr merkwürdig verhalten und bin sofort an der nächstmöglichen Raststätte raus und siehe da... Der Reifen vorne Rechts ist geplatzt! Na super - das hat uns jetzt noch gefehlt... Wir wollten doch nur nach Hause nach der langen Zeit in Split :( Also, habe ich den Autovermieter angerufen und ihm den Fall geschildert - Ca. 25 Minuten später kam auch direkt schon der ADAC der das Fahrzeug aufgeladen hat und uns mit zur Werkstatt mitgenommen hat. Dort angekommen wurde das Fahrzeug abgeladen und im Büro haben wir einige Details geschildert und haben dann freundlicherweise einen ADAC Club Mietwagen erhalten, mit dem wir um kurz nach Mitternacht unsere Reise fortsetzen konnten.
While we were driving home, I looked through the rental company’s paperwork and was horrified to discover that both front tires had damage. According to the rental agreement, the tires were already listed as having significant damage, and yet the car was still handed over to me. I can’t understand how something like this can happen – I could have had a serious accident at 160 km/h, potentially endangering other road users as well. The rental company had given me a vehicle that was unfit for use on public roads.
Anyway, around 2:45 AM, we finally made it home and collapsed into bed. The next day, I returned the rental car to the ADAC, and everything went smoothly. A few days later, I had almost forgotten about the incident when I started receiving multiple calls asking whether I had returned the car. I explained each time that there had been an accident and that the car was with the ADAC. It seems their internal communication wasn’t great. Regardless, the charge was still pending on my credit card.
A few days later, I received an email stating that the car would soon be reported as stolen. I thought to myself, WTF! I angrily replied to the email. Although I didn’t receive a response, the next day the charge on my credit card disappeared. At least that was a small victory – I didn’t have to pay for the rental, but unfortunately, I had been driving in dangerous conditions on the road.
Während wir so nach Hause fahren hab ich mir die Unterlagen des Autovermieters angesehen und musste dann mit entsetzen feststellen, das beide vordere Reifen Beschädigungen aufweisen. Dementsprechend stand bereits im Mietvertrag drin, das die Reifen massive Beschädigungen aufwiesen und das Fahrzeug wurde mir dennoch ausgehändigt. Ich verstehe nicht, was sowas soll - Ich hätte bei 160 km/h massivst verunglücken können und dementsprechend zeitgleich andere Verkehrsteilnehmer ernsthaft und ungewollt in Gefahr bringen. Demnach hatte der Autovermieter mir ein Fahrzeug ausgehändigt, welches nicht zulässig war, für den Betrieb im öffentlichen Verkehrsraum.
Naja, um ca. 2:45 Uhr Nacht sind wir dann endlich zuhause angekommen und sind platt ins Bett gefallen. Am nächsten Tag habe ich das geliehene Fahrzeug dem ADAC zurückgebracht und da war auch alles in Ordnung. Nun hatte nach ein paar Tagen den Vorfall schon fast vergessen bis ich mehrfache Anrufe erhielt, ob ich das Fahrzeug schon zurückgebracht hätte... Ich schilderte immer, das es einen Unfall gab und das Fahrzeug beim ADAC ist... Anscheinend war die Kommunikation da intern nicht besonders gut - Wie dem auch sei - Auf meiner Kreditkarte war immernoch der Betrag zur Abbuchung bereit... Ein paar Tage später erhielt ich dann eine E-Mail das das Fahrzeug in Kürze zur Fahndung ausgeschrieben wird... Ich dachte mir so WTF! Und habe dann Böse auf die E-Mail geantwortet. Ich erhielt zwar keine Antwort aber 1 Tag später war die Buchung auf der Kreditkarte verschwunden. Immerhin ein kleiner Erfolg, das ich für die Miete des Fahrzeugs nicht bezahlen musste aber leider recht gefährlich auf den Straßen unterwegs war.

Meine Erfahrung mit Mietwagen war eigentlich bisher sehr gut... Durch diesen Vorfall ist mein Misstrauen aber den Autovermietern gestiegen. Wie seht ihr das? Habt ihr schonmal einen geplatzen Reifen gehabt? Auf der Autobahn? Schreibt's in die Kommentare.
I don't know of it's crazier that they gave you a car with faulty tires or you driving at 160km! You lot are crazy drivers 😂
Ja zum Glück im Unglück. Des ist schnell mal Tödlich so ne Geschichte. Hab als Kind mals sowas erlebt im Auto und froh waren wir als wir gestanden waren alle.
Kommt immer wieder mal vor wenn gespart werden will für die Gewinne in der Autobranche. War schon vor 20 Jahren auch so, mit Toten... Die Reifen haben wir über nen billigen Vertragspartner den auch jeder kennt verkauft, im gutem Glauben. Allinklusive sozusagen.
Aber Hauptsache der Kratzer wird abgeschrieben.
So oder so, auf Reise braucht man Wegeglück.

Wow, that is really horrible! I am sorry that you had to deal with that. I've had good rental car experiences and bad ones, but never quite anything like that! I can't believe they put that thing back on the road.
Leider sind die Mitarbeiter der Autovermietern immer noch sehr schlecht bezahlt und daher kann man keinen besonders guten Service von dem erwarten. Glücklicherweise bist du nicht verletzt und sicher nach Hause gekommen.
Germans and their highways: They only slow down to 160 km/h when they're almost out of tires ;-)
If it was me, I would demand a full refund. For time wasted and threatening my life. Should they resist, I would threaten them right back with legal action. Hopefully this will wake them up, as they cannot endanger peoples lives.
