The Galata Tower is very famous and it is one of the symbolic buildings of Istanbul. In the 6th century AD,
the tower was originally built as a lantern tower and later served for different purposes. Throughout history,
it has functions such as prision, fire surveillance, observatory.
Galata Tower is 70 meters in length, 9 meters inside, 14 meters outside diameter. The weight of the structure is estimated at 10 tons.
The tower, which suffered great damage during the Crusades, was rebuilt by the Genoese with the name "Jesus Tower". The structure is thought to be as strong as a castle. The tower is also known as the place where Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi performed flight experiments.
Since 1967, the tower has been used for touristic purposes. You do not have a chance to miss the tower while walking on Istiklal Caddesi in Taksim.
Galata Tower and its surroundings are always crowded. There are many places where you can sit,relax, eat and drink. It is also possible to find original items,souvenirs at small shops around the tower. The tower can be reached by elevator. There is also a small café and restaurant on the top floor.
You should not be surprised when you see the one way signs on the balcony because the area that you will walk on the outer balconies
is quite narrow and the tower is always crowded.!
