Today I want to share with you my experience with traveling on a professional level.
For almost two years I am on a full-time contract with a Media Company in Germany, which has customers around the world. Although this company has only 8 Employees we have got customers like RedBull, so its not a no-name agency.
So what is the Situation, I base my opinion on:
Last year I was away from Home at about 165/365 Days. Most of the Days were over the weekend, or shortly before or after.
I am currently in Austria and until the middle of October, I will be in the following countries: Netherlands, France, Turkey, USA and UK. Thats basically what I have to deal with all summer. I've worked straight from October last year until now, with exactly 4 days off.
The Pros
Obviously there are a lot of benefits to living a lifestyle like that. For one you visit so many cool places. I work in Media, so we mostly work at places, that are interesting or visually pleasing. That is probably the biggest benefit. Also you get to know so many different and interesting people and get to do things, that many people don't get to do, or at least have to pay a lot of money for it. So we all travel for free of course, so you literally spend no penny, during your stay abroad. Except you intend to buy something fancy for you or your Girlfriend. Also you have a lot of stories to tell your friends, when you are at home.
But that is basically all there is on the "Pro" side.
The Cons
Straight up, it sucks living out of a suitcase for weeks and weeks in a row. You'll learn to appreciate a Wardrobe, the way you would never thought of. Also it takes a long time to sleeping in different beds all the time. You also have to be aware of the culture in the country you are staying in. I also mentioned friends in the Pro section. Well you should deal with the thought that after doing that job for a while only the really really good friends will stick around. Everybody else will be gone. I guarantee you that. So keep that in mind.
Generally speaking, in my option, it is still worth it, as long as you are in the right circumstances. If you have a Girlfriend that is ok with it, or is traveling a lot as well, you are set. Also you need to love what you are doing, because if you just do It for the Money or the Traveling your job will eat you up. I've seen that happen and it's not pretty.
Just keep in mind, that everything comes with a price.
A little pro tip:
You can get into that lifestyle pretty easy, if you are familiar with Media Production or TV Broadcasting. Just contact one of the big TV Broadcast companies and ask them if they need any help. 9 out of 10 Times they will say yes, since there are not too many good people around.
