Kenny's Vlog: Cooking for my first Wedding! Thoughts on Euphemisms & Logical Inconsistency

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Hello beautiful humans!

I'm coming at you day two from the home of Porcfest, where I just cooked for my first wedding reception! I recorded this video first thing this morning when I was heading over to the kitchen, and my phone sat there hot-spotting to upload the video for about 4 hours, and when it was finally done I was so busy for the rest of the day that I just got around to typing this up, 14 hours after recording.

The wedding was only about 150 people, and the plan was basically just taco bar... but boy did I catch a few curve-balls today. There were a couple of 2-3 gallon pots, a pop-up propane stove, and a GIANT charcoal grill. Now, with that cooking equipment, I had about 10 pounds of black beans, and a case each of asparagus, sweet potato, avocado, tomato, and a few other things. It all came together quite well, and easefully, though exceptionally long.

I go on a bit of a tangent there at the end too, because I've been finding myself getting more and more annoyed with folks who are generally principled, and claim moral superiority over others quite often, yet still consume meat regularly and are gung-ho for capitalism.

I'm thinking I'll probably write something tomorrow, since I have about 15 hours of travel time. If not, I'll definitely do another video at least :-)

Nice ingredients... vegan :) mind/body/soul food.

great effort im sure kenny.. im al too familiar with cooking for loads of people with tiny pots and having things spilling over the tops when you try to even mix em.. Im sure the food was full of love and light.. which is the best ingredient..

when we judge others and point the finger, there are always three fingers pointing back at us ;-) xx

looking forward to it. I'm torn about eating meat. I always have. Now, I believe it's wrong. I need to stop.. don't think it will be that hard but.. that's subject to reality.

How can any meat eater claim to be in harmony with nature? How could anyone raise an animal to eat it? I'd be giving them names.

animals, when you look close, someone's in there. I don't know what to call it but it has feelings. I do not want to hurt it, bottom line. That feels bad.

I feel you. I ate meat every day for the first 25 or so years of my life, and was even that guy arguing "but bacon" sometimes. Thankfully, once I went to a clean (non-processed, GMO free, organic) diet and started detoxing, my body absolutely refused to let me eat meat anymore.

Since that time I've gone from being vegan simply for health reasons, to reinforcing that with environmental & economic reasons, and finally meat-eating anarchists convinced me of the moral argument through their absolute inability to defend their own actions philosophically.

To me, it seems that the reason the programming to eat meat is so pervasive is the same as with taxes, war, etc. Because people are totally removed from the act itself, they are able to out-source responsibility for what they are doing. I've talked to SO many people who say they wouldn't kill an animal to eat it, yet will quickly buy a plastic-wrapped dead thing from the grocery store.

I'm guessing you've read @mckeever's Vegan Anarchy series?

A couple of my favorite vegan YouTubers:

No, not familiar with @mckeever , thanks for the links, I'll check them out.

wow

Thanks for the mention @kennyskitchen. @truthabides, here is a link to my most recent Vegan Anarchy post, with links to the other articles included in my signature.

thanks for the link:

A world without government is incomplete and, in my view, unattainable in a world that still views animals as commodities rather than companions.

I love the unique challenges of cooking for lots of people under less than ideal conditions. It's quite rewarding.

As for the meat consumption...I heard an interesting notion the other day, I think it was on NPR. A scientist, or group of researchers, is suggesting that creatures like scallops and shrimp are basically sea plants. As in, their systems are not designed or set up for feeling pain or any type of conscious awareness. Any actions they take are not significantly different than the actions plants take when seeking water, defending from predators, or reaching toward sunlight.

It was in interesting idea and I just wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts on the subject.

Like I've said before, if i had to be responsible for killing the meats I eat, I would only eat Chicken and Fish. I am glad that I dont like the taste of Lamb, but I do enjoy beef. I could live without it though. Raising it and then slaughtering an animal I raised would be incredibly difficult. I think I'd still eat eggs though. I started out on a farm in Arkansas. One of my earliest memories are of my mom cutting the head off a chicken and watching it run around until it fell over. Then watching her pluck and prepare it in the kitchen. I plan on having chickens in my future, when I find a house here in Oregon.
