There is not much left of old Thira, but the location is beautiful. The ancient city is perched on a narrow limestone ridge linking Mount Profitis Ilias to Mesa Vouno, overlooking the sea. Founded in the 9th century BC By the Dorians, this natural fortress reached its peak under the Ptolemies, but declined under the Romans, before being abandoned in the 13th century.
