These unique floating islands are located in the Titicaca Lake, shared by Peru and Bolivia. There are over forty islands, and is a must see place when visiting Peru.
The legend says that Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo (Sun's children) came from the lake to found the capital on the Inca Empire.
The lake is located in Puno, in the southeastern part of the country, over 3 800 meters over sea level. Make sure you take at least three days to visit the city, some people needs more than one day to adjust to the altitude(keep it in mind if this city is your first stop).
What I love the most of these Islands, is the people, they have managed to maintained the culture and tradition alive over all these years.Once you get on the boat and get into the lake you will notice few small boats like in the picture, Totora reed is from what they are made from, the Uros use totora to make their homes and the islands they live on. Every family member in each island have a job, they all work as a team, some take care of renewing the reed of the island, some work as tourist guides, and others take care of the daily "house tasks".
There is so much more this magical place.... look forward Trip to Uros Islands, Part 2
This looks beautiful must be a great place to visit!
It is!!
