Travel Diary from Finland

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Five weeks of traveling behind. It doesn't really feel like such many days on the road, but we have been seeing a lot in Finland, Estonia and Latvia. We've been traveling really slowly so far, trying to find out our route and plans and just driving aimlessly sometimes. This post is a bit of a diary about our first three weeks from Finland.

Our roadtrip started from Rovaniemi on 16th of July. We traveled through Finland mostly visiting relatives and stopping by all those places we would normally just drive past. There's a lot to see in own country, but usually we're just too busy going home. Koli National Park was really beautiful and our little evening walk ended up for a pretty tough hike trough all of the hills and waiting for the sunrise on the most highest spot. While watching the sunrise, we also met two photographers from Åbo who invited us to see their shooting locations back home if we end up near by.

From Koli we drove to Kitee to spend few nights in a cabin on an island. We watched lunar eclipse, fought bees and scared for our lives (or at least our expensive new camera) on a boat ride.

After those lazy days, we traveled straight through to other side of Finland. In Rauma we saw damages of a storm. So far we hadn't seen a single drop of rain and it was sunny there when we arrived, so it was a bit weird to see tunnels full of water and branches all over roads. Next night was calm, but right after we left, the storm was back. Missed it, lucky us!

Next stop was Mynämäki near Åbo. We spend the day with Niina's god son and his family. In the evening it was so nice to have a good sauna and have a swim in a pure lake. Next day after enjoying ice creams in the center, we continued to Åbo. There we actually met those two gyus from Koli and went together to see deer in Ruissalo. Beware of tics there, Lauri caught one on his leg and we foung another from his trousers. In Finland at least has been a lot of talk about tics and how much diseases they carry. No panic, we got it off and Lauri is feeling fine.

In this point we were in need of sauna again. It really is something that we miss and maybe we are just being so desperately finnish. We ended up to buying a sauna tent and waited it at Karkkila. It's name could be translated to candyland. After getting and testing our sauna tent, we were ready to head Helsinki and get ferry tickets to Tallinn. We'll introduce our sauna to you later!

The scenery looks awesome.

The sauna tent however, was it any good? Did it get warm, how many people would comfortably fit in it, was the stove warm enough to get the water warm in case you'd like to wash yourself a bit?

Good luck on your travels!

Sauna tent was amazing! It heated up really fast and kept warm pretty well. We only have two stools, so we fit very comfortably just two of us. With a longer bench it may fit 4 people. Our tent is the smallest one of Savottas sauna tents, so for more people I'd recommend a bigger one. We had our water buckets in sauna for the whole time we had it warm and one bucket just below the rocks. That way the water we threw on rocks partly poured back to bucket. We washed ourselves with semi warm water and we think that was the best. After sauna you don't even want the water to be hot. There's also actual water containers for the stove available, but we don't need it (nor have space for it). I hope this answers to your questions and sorry for being to slow to reply. Please ask more if we missed something!

Thanks, I'll have to look into this a bit more :)

We don't have a sauna in our "rivitalo" so it would be neat to have a tent sauna outdoors every now and then.

I have always wanted to visit Koli but am still yet to. Looks great, love the photo.

It's definitely worth a visit.

Everyone should experience Koli https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolibakteeri

😂😂 Ahaha, this was good. But if anyone doesn't quite get it, these are two waaay different things.

Koli was really wonderful. We really wish we had some camping gear with us so we could have stayed the night in the forest. Worth visiting for sure! And see the sunrise ❤️

Nice one dear.

Thanks! Trying hard 💪

We've met a lot of wonderful people on our way and even got invites to their homes! We've spent days and evenings with sharing stories from our countries, so it's been amazing. Always looking forward for more :)
