The Skull & Bones of St. Oliver Plunkett

St. Peter's Church - Drogheda, Ireland

Recently I visited St. Peter's Church in Drogheda, Ireland with my friend @cneck. St. Peter's Church is a massive and beautiful cathedral in the heart of the town. At the side of the alter lies the skull and bones of Saint Oliver Plunkett.

Oliver Plunkett was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland back in the mid 1600's. He was tried and found guilty of high treason "for promoting the Roman faith" in 1681. He was then hanged, drawn and quartered at the age of 55 and will be remembered as the last Roman Catholic martyr to die in England. Plunkett was canonized in 1975, making him the first Irish saint in almost seven hundred years.

Above is the actual door to the cell in which Oliver Plunkett was imprisoned. The massive locking mechanisms on this thing are ridiculous. I got an eerie feeling from looking at this door and imagining someone imprisoned behind it. A woman a few years ago got a video that appears to show a ghost peering through the small cell window. Could the spirit of Saint Oliver Plunkett be lurking around St. Peter's Church?

Beside the prison door was a case that contained some relics of Saint Oliver Plunkett. It looks like this could be ribs and a shoulder bone, among other things. I thought it was kind of weird and dark that the church had these artifacts on display next to the alter.

Not only does the church contain Plunkett's bones, it also has his head. Below is a picture of the preserved skull of Saint Oliver Plunkett, which sits in a gold case beside the alter of St. Peter's Church. It has been at this church since June of 1921.

Above is a picture I took of the gold case with Plunkett's head inside. At the time of taking this photo, I was fairly certain that it was not blurry. When I take blurry shots, I usually delete them off the camera right away. When I got home and uploaded the memory card to my computer I noticed the photo was incredibly blurry with what looks like "222" marked on the head of Saint Oliver. It's a freaky sign, because when I googled "the meaning of 222", I got results saying the number 222 is the mark of an angel.

Overall my visit to St. Peter's Church was definitely very interesting. I highly recommend stopping by to see it's beautiful design and historical artifacts.
