My first trip to Israel (Doing business and enjoying life in Middle East) - part 1 [DE/ENG]

Tel Aviv here I come …

Auf geht es in die zweitgrößte Stadt Israels. Leider nicht zum Vergnügen, aber positiv gesehen, könnte man sagen, dass ich dafür bezahlt werde in eine so spannende Stadt zu reisen. Viel hat man schon gehört über Israel, das Meiste aus den Nachrichten und eher selten sind diese positiv. Tel Aviv selbst soll sehr schön und weltoffen sein, aber das hat man schon über andere Orte gesagt. Zum Glück muss ich mich da bald nicht mehr auf Gerüchte oder Aussagen von Kollegen verlassen und werde es selbst erleben.

I‘m heading towards the second largest city of Israel. Unfortunately it is not for pleasure, but positively seen, one could say that I am paid to travel to such an exciting city.
I've heard a lot about Israel, mostly from the news and what is reported there is rarely positive. Tel Aviv itself is said to be very beautiful and cosmopolitan, but this has already been said about other places. Fortunately, very soon I won’t have to rely on rumours or statements from colleagues any more and experience it myself.

Meine ersten Erfahrungen habe ich bereits weit vor dem Abflug gemacht. Die Kosten für den Flug können überall auf einer Skala von unglaublich billig, bis unverschämt teuer rangieren, je nachdem welche Fluggesellschaft und Route man wählt. Hat man zB das Glück in München zu leben gibt es einen Direktflug, von Düsseldorf aus blieb mir aber nur die Option mit Zwischenstopp an einem Flughafen meiner Wahl, in Kiew, Paris oder Istanbul. Ich habe mich schließlich für Warschau entschieden. Nicht der schönste Flughafen, aber die Verbindung war ok und ich müsste ausnahmsweise mal nicht mitten in der Nacht aufstehen. Das Hotel zu buchen war hingegen schon spannender. Ein erster Blick in die Buchungsplattform verhieß unglaublich günstige Unterkunftsmöglichkeiten, aber schnell stellte sich heraus, dass das auch mal Badezimmer auf dem Gang bedeuten kann, an WLAN gar nicht zu denken. Auch Übernachtungen im Schlafsaal sind hier keine Seltenheit und ich lass von Übernachtungen unter freiem Himmel. Nun gut, dann halt das Touristen-Hotel in Strandnähe, hoffentlich hält das auch, was es verspricht für den Preis von 170 Dollar die Nacht sollte man schon etwas erwarten können.

I made my first experiences already long before departure.
The costs for the flight can be anywhere on a scale from incredibly cheap to outrageously expensive, depending on which airline and route you choose. If you’re lucky enough to live in Munich, for example, there is a direct flight, but from Düsseldorf I only had the option of stopping at an airport of my choice, e.g. Kiev, Paris or Istanbul. I finally decided to go via Warsaw. Not the most beautiful airport, but the connection was ok and at least I didn't have to get up in the middle of the night.
Booking the hotel was more exciting. A first look into the booking platform promised incredibly cheap accommodation possibilities, but it quickly turned out that this could mean a shared bathroom, not even thinking about WLAN. Also overnight stays in a kind of dormitory are not uncommon and I read about the possibility to sleep under the open sky as well.
Well, then the tourist hotel close to the beachsounds like the best option, hopefully it also keeps what it promises for the price of 170 dollars a night.

Tel Aviv war einst ein Vorort der Hafenstadt Jaffa, welche es bereits seit der Antike gab. 1950 wurden beide zusammengelegt und bilden nunmehr die Metropole Tel Aviv-Jaffa, wirtschaftliches, sowie gesellschaftliches Zentrum des Landes. Mir knapp 444000 Einwohnern (Stand 2017) wirkt sie am Europäischen Standard gemessen erstmal nicht so groß, die Metropolregion zählt jedoch deutlich über 3 Millionen Menschen.

Die Stadt verspricht einiges, von Kultur, über Sandstrände bis zu einem ausgeprägten Nachtleben, mal sehen für was in den nächsten Tagen neben der Arbeit Zeit bleibt. Vor Ort werde ich von einer Partnerfirma betreut, ich hoffe also neben dem üblichen Touristen-Programm etwas über Land und Leute zu lernen.

Tel Aviv was once a suburb of the port city Jaffa, which already existed since ancient times. In 1950 both were merged and now form the metropolis Tel Aviv-Jaffa, economic and social centre of the country.
With almost 444000 inhabitants (as of 2017), it doesn't seem so big at first, measured by European standard, but the metropolitan region counts clearly more than 3 million people.

The city promises a lot, from cultural events and beaches to a pronounced nightlife, let's see if there‘ll be some time the next few days besides work.
I am supported by a local partner company, so I hope to learn something about the country and its people in addition to the usual tourist program.

Travelling by plane, the same procedure …

Die Reise ging erstmal mit einiger Verspätung in Düsseldorf los. Glücklicherweise hatte ich genug Zeitpuffer in Warschau, der Anschlussflug war also nicht gefährdet und ob ich nun in Düsseldorf oder in Polen warte, das Ergebnis ist das gleiche. Geflogen wird heute mit LOT Polish Airlines und mir fällt als erstes das unglaublich junge Personal auf. Als zweites doch die unglaublich alte Maschine und ein paar, sagen wir mal Schönheitsfehler.

Durch die Verspätung müssen wir auch noch auf einen Slot zum Start warten, also nochmal 30 Minuten später. Wenigstens unterhält mich eine aufgekratzte Niederländerin, die mit ihrer Schlafmaske quer durch den Flieger läuft, einen Schlafplatz am Fenster sucht und sich schließlich lauthals über die Verspätung echauffiert. Der Viertelliter Rotwein hat sie schließlich in den Schlaf geschickt, sportlich für nicht mal 13 Uhr. Fliegen ist wirklich selten langweilig und man lernt sehr viel über seine Mitmenschen.

The journey started with a delay in Düsseldorf. Fortunately I had enough time buffer in Warsaw, so the connecting flight was not endangered and whether I wait in Düsseldorf or in Poland, the result is the same.
Today I am flying with LOT Polish Airlines and the first thing I notice is the incredibly young staff. Secondly, the incredibly old aircraft and a few, let's say, blemishes.

Due to the delay we also had to wait for a slot to start, another 30 minutes later.
At least I'm entertained by a scratched-up Dutchwoman who is running across the plane with her sleep mask, looking for a place to sleep at the window and finally getting loud about the delay.
The quarter-litre red wine finally sent her to sleep, sporty for not even 1 pm.
Flying is rarely boring and you learn a lot about your fellow human beings.

Frédéric-Chopin-Flughafen in Warschau ist sicher nicht der größte Flughafen, aber schon deutlich weitläufiger als Düsseldorf. Das Terminal ist schlauchförmig angelegt und alles in einem scheußlichen Orange gehalten. Vor allem ist es aber voll, sehr voll, prima, denn das mag ich ja besonders … nicht. Ich habe noch nie zuvor so viele verschiedene Sorten Wodka gesehen. Ach und natürlich hatte der Flug Verspätung, aber immerhin etwa 1 1/2 Stunden später geht es dann aber los in den mittleren Osten. Mit mir an Board eine polnische Reisegruppe, alle markiert mit grünen Halstüchern, ein Schmunzeln könnte ich mir nicht verkneifen.

Frédéric Chopin Airport in Warsaw is certainly not the largest airport, but it is much more extensive than Düsseldorf. The terminal has a tubular design and everything is kept in an awful orange. Above all, however, it is full, very full, I really don't like that about travelling. I'Ve never seen so many different sorts of vodka before.
And of course the flight was also delayed, but finally we started to towards Middle East.

Finally there …

Der Flughafen Ben Gurion sieht erstmal nicht anders aus, als gewohnt, groß scheint er und recht gepflegt. Im typischen Stil des mittleren Ostens gehalten und doch irgendwie modern. Ich habe auch direkt mein erstes hebräisches Wort gelernt und dann hieß es erstmal ein Stück laufen. Der Grenzbeamte spricht sogar etwas deutsch und ist sehr freundlich. So ist die Migration schnell erledigt, ich bekomme mein Kärtchen und es geht auf Richtung Hotel.

The airport Ben Gurion doesn't look different compared to other airports, it seems big and well maintained. In the typical style of the Middle East, yet somehow modern. I've directly learned my first Hebrew word, followed by some walking.
The border official even speaks some German and is very friendly. So the migration is quickly done, I get my card and head towards the hotel.
