The Red Lake is Romania's largest natural mountain lake. It is a natural dam lake dating since 1838. It was formed after a collapse of a slope due to an earthquake. Following the collapse, the forest was flooded, and the trees were petrified. The current view of the lake is quite disturbing and unsettling.
Legends have been developed regarding the formation of the lake. They refer a lacustrian civilization which was flooded, and the fir stumps become symbol of their presence.
Its name is justified by the reddish alluvia of iron oxides and iron hydroxides.
The landscape becomes lifeful due to the flocks of ducks that live on the lake and have a friendly relationship with humans.
