Into the white: My glacier walk on top of Europe

in #travel7 years ago

Happily I didn't knew we were going to cross a 30 meter deep crevasse later that day...

I want to show you some of my pictures from an adventure in Switzerland. In the 70's my grandmother did a glacier walk on top of Europe and now it was my turn to do the same.

We started before sunrise and took a train to one of the highest mountains in Europe - Jungfrau at more than 4000 meters above sea level.

Me just before we started the one day walk on the glacier. The weather was amazing! The air was thin and the sun so bright. At first my eyes got so much tears that I almost could not see anything even if I was wearing sunglasses, but I still felt cool with the ice ax haha.

The glacier, Aletsch, is several miles wide.

In company with a professional guide we started the walk. Paired with ropes if someone would fall into a hidden crack under the snow. The view was magnificent.

At one point we had to pass a 30 meter deep crevasse. One by one we walked over the crack with the ice ax as support on a natural bridge of snow - which was barely half a meter wide. Some in the team started to feel the altitude sickness at this point, so glad I did not.

Probably my best lunch view of the year! It was hypnotizing to watch the clouds pass by.

We ended up walking up on a hillside overlooking the valley, thousands of meters below.

I was so fascinated by the glacier that is constantly changing and forming new formations. I feel such gratitude for this experience.

What adventures are you dreaming of?

Thank you! Yes it was a memory for life :)

wooohh ... this adventure seems very interesting to me, I would like some day to have the happiness of visiting a glacial, since in my country they do not exist
