Brunch Adventure, Oakland Grill - Oakland, California

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

During my most recent visit to San Francisco, I couldn't help myself but to think about pursuing a meal at Oakland Grill, known to be top 100 breakfast joints in America. Unbeknownst to me until just the night before, this restaurant was just literally 10 minutes away from my Airbnb and you couldn’t believe how eggscited I was to have a chance to finally experience the wonderful taste of the famous and apparently perfectly done omelet!

Serving breakfast anytime of the day, I took no chances at arriving here early as I read online that the lines would fill up quite quickly early in the morning. This will be one of the few times I would ever say this…. “thank you Yelp reviews!” Had a couple reviews not warn me to arrive early, I would’ve been stuck in an hour or so wait, just for breakfast! As we were getting sat, we instantly noticed multiple big groups of people proceeding to walk into the establishment and slowly formed a line outside the door. My girlfriend and I was sat on the upstairs seating overlooking the restaurant’s main floor, definitely a great atmosphere for a brunch/breakfast date. Our waitress promptly came to introduce herself and my girlfriend and I both decided that since we were already going to go to wine tastings later on during the day, why not start off the morning right and go for the Strawberry mimosa that so many people have complimented on!

As we browsed through the small but delicious read of Oakland Grill's menu I was unable to find the crustacean goodness omelet I was hungry to dive into , I took notice only a few moments later of a limited time special menu that was placed on our table. On there, I found just what I was looking for; the limited time Dungeness Crab Omelette!

Dungeness Crab Omelette

  • Succulent, perfectly cooked, fresh, fluffy and light to the touch, this omelette might be one of the best I've ever had in all of my travels. The freshness of the dungeness crab was apparent throughout the dish, paired with spinach and sweet and juicy diced tomatoes; every single bite into this omelette brings forth an image of the diving into the vast blue ocean and into the deep where these crustaceans roam freely. Topped off by the made in-house hollandaise sauce, the wonderful taste of crab gets mellowed out and blends perfectly to sooth one's taste buds. I think I may never taste an omelette this good again, of course until the next time I visit Oakland grill; and I pray that this dish will be available then as it is a seasonal thing that the restaurant serves.
  • The sides to this dish was nothing less than wonderful I must say. The cubed potatoes lightly salted was a great side and to balance things out, our chef added a slice of orange for citrus and cantaloupe for sweetness. My mouth salivate as I type this blog....

My girlfriend's choice dish was something I would have never expected from her to order this day. I guess the vacation mode was on at full blast as she ordered probably the most well-known dish from Oakland Grill, the Dungeness Crab Cake Benedict.

  • Poached eggs, done to perfection (what I deem perfection as I can't poach an egg to save my life, lol) lying over two medium sized, fully loaded dungeness crab cakes which then were placed over English Muffins, and finished with the once again in-house hollandaise sauce. This harmony of flavors is something you cannot replicate, mostly with the dungeness crab at fault for it being so fresh as we are so near to one of our main piers where most of the States' seafood are shipped. This meal was everything that I thought it would be and more.
  • I've heard plenty about this establishment but never would've thought the foods would be this wonderful and fresh. Located in an area most people wouldn't think to visit, but I will say it is well worth the travel. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that may be near the Bay area and isn't afraid of a little bit of a drive out to Oakland!

No trip to San Francisco would be complete if you don't take a picture of the picturesque view of the city night. Here is a picture of me and my girlfriend with the city view that no picture could do justice. I instantly fell in love with this view and can say after multiple tries in countless of spots to get the best view around the city, Twin Peaks San Francisco is the place to go!

Sounds like you had a great and delicious trip to the Bay Area! (I live in Sonoma, just north of SF, and I used to live in Oakland). The Oakland Grill is legendary.

Bonus points for having a Dungeness crab omelette! That crab is in season and an iconic food of the Bay Area. Travel safe and thanks for sharing :)

I absolutely did! Many are so scared of going to Oakland but I found that it is a beautiful place that is proceeding towards the gentrifying era, the crab was dogone amazing and I can't wait to come back =)

Yes, many are afraid of Oakland. But, as you noted, Oakland is being gentrified and is now almost as expensive as San Francisco! The New York Times even named it one of the top cities to visit a few years ago - even SF didn't make the list. I commend you for venturing off the beaten path. Come to Wine Country next time!! :)

p.s. following you now, fellow foodies unite!

Thank you! I also have followed you =) I was actually in Nappa later that same day and visited cuvaison winery. Fortunately it was the week just right before the wildfires that happened and it was one of the few wineries that survived it. I will come back to San Francisco one day soon!

Ah, yes, Cuvaison, I've been there many times, nice wines. Don't worry - 95% of wineries survived the fires. I'm actually a wine writer and was reporting on the fires - so there is plenty to still drink and many wineries to still visit. We look forward to your return! :)

That is amazing! I'm looking forward to reading more about your wine visits!
