How a Himalayan Alpha Dog Domesticated a Hooman!

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Have you ever been in a Mexican standoff? Apparently, it often ends up in a fight to the death! Now, throw in a pack of fierce, mountain dogs and surely there’s a story worth telling! But what do you do in such a scenario? Would you run away or face them head-on and expect not to get ripped to shreds?

Well, I’m not the one to back down from a challenge, so I charged towards them upon intimidation. I had my throttle wide open, my motorcycle picking up speed, and they bolted towards me, barking and growling!

Seconds later, I just stopped about 50 mts from them and turned off my motorcycle! They stopped charging ahead, and paused to asses the situation. Now I could see him clearly, and he was a big dog and led a pack of three. I gave him a long look and then suddenly felt powerless.

What happened to all that rage inside me? It was gone! There wasn't any need to be hostile!

Looking around me I realized that I was at an incredible place. I’ve dreamt of riding here for a decade, and now a decade later here I was in the middle of the Nubra Valley, at 9500 ft in the cold high altitude desert of Ladakh! I was calm as the Buddha himself!

Moments ago I had ridden past him and his sleepy friends when I was exploring the rocky dry riverside, and unintentionally I had ruined their afternoon nap. The noise from my motorcycle ride nearby disturbed them. I’m certain, Mr. Alpha thought I was going to steal his favorite rock, under which he’s been hiding all his Himalayan treasures. As it would seem, the hooman owed an apology or face the wrath for his disruptive behavior!

Nearly motionless, I remained seated on my motorcycle, as they continued staring at me and then signaled them to come over! Mr. Alpha understood it and led the pack towards me. He came closer and circled around my motorcycle twice, maintaining a safe 2-feet distance from me whilst sniffing and trying to figure out the contraption which caused all the racket! I kept observing him at which point he grunted, almost as if to indicate his comrades that the situation was now under control.

He circled around once more and sat down next to me and allowed me to pet him and scratch his head! It was his way of making acquaintance he said. I called his buddies over but they weren't interested anymore and walked away. A few minutes later he decides to lie down next to me. I couldn't believe that after nearly 3 weeks riding solo here I was in the mountains with a beautiful dog, with a great personality, giving a total stranger some much needed company.

This hooman heart was instantly captured, while the feeble hooman mind was in the process of being taken over forever!

He knows how to strike a pose

I’ve been riding through the biting cold, rain and sleet crossing one of the highest motorable passes on earth only hours ago and felt like I could do with some rest. With the battery dying on my phone, I quickly plugged my earphones and played, “Jimmy Hendrix - Voodoo Child”. Listening to Hendrix devilishly playing his guitar lit up my brain. It’s one of the greatest tracks ever and not a day went by that I didn’t listen to it on my adventure.

I decided to call my new friend, “Jimmy,” and he called me Hooman with a ‘woof!’

I sat down next to him, shot a few pictures as and relished every bit of the moment. Couple of hours passed and I managed a quick nap next to him, and before I knew it was time to leave. The weather was turning bad and I had a fair bit of miles to ride.

As I prepared to set off he walked ahead of my motorcycle, leading us back to the road. Quite a charmer isn’t he?

A few days later I was riding through this area and befriended his owner. At the time Jimmy had set off on his daily adventure and I missed seeing him. It wasn’t until 10 months later that I would meet him again!

I was back in Khalsar, an area of Nubra Valley which has a “dhaba” (small roadside restaurants serving local snacks) at the junction where the road bifurcates towards the incredible Siachen Glacier and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and India’s Line-Of-Actual-Control. I met somebody there whom I had befriended earlier and enquired about Jimmy.

He informed me that Jimmy is around today and I should call him by his real name “Shera” (Lion) to get him back and I screamed his name as loud as I could. Within minutes as if I was expected to arrive, I saw Jimmy jumping out of the nearby bushes along with his doggy friend and running towards me!

He seemed to recognize me and was thrilled to see me again! We played a little as we did a year ago and I fed him a few biscuits and bread. He was thrilled and sat down as usual allowing me to rub his head and back which he enjoys very much! I think he was happy to give me a permanent job of scratching him! He clearly didn’t want me to stop!

Dont stop scratching me hooman! Obey your master!

I spent about an hour with him before proceeding with my drive towards the border areas. Even as I had travelled in an SUV that I was testing at the time and wanted to take him with me, it just didn't feel right to displace him. He is loved by all in the area and well looked after. He has the whole Himalaya as his playground, a city life is just not for him! He’s just a wandering nomad at heart, just as his Hooman biker friend!

Dog’s do speak, but only to those who know how to listen! - Orhan Pamuk

This is true! I suppose sometimes the best relationships start off on a seemingly wrong yet trivial note and you quickly realize that it isn’t hard to reach an understanding!

I’ve travelled far and wide within my own country and I‘ve made several great connections with people from all over the world but it felt as though on my travels to the mountains, it was Jimmy that made my life whole!

Tempting as it was, I just couldn’t take the responsibility of a dog at the time owing to my lifestyle but knew deep inside he’d always be mine. No matter how far he is, I know that I’ll always go back to see him, and I did see him once again the following year. But unfortunately I lost those pictures from a hard-drive crash!

He was still there, waiting to see me…and we played together and bonded once again! Maybe this is why they say, a dog is truly man’s best friend!

This was 5 years ago and I miss him terribly to date!

@sjennon sent me a drawing of a dog and as I was working on this story which I’ve never shared before, she quickly drew another which resembled Jimmy. For this, I heart you @sjennon!

Thank you, dear friend ,for your story. It deeply touched my heart. It's a beautiful story of Your life. I like to read Your stories. I wish You health, success in Your good deeds. Remember that like attracts like.

Thank you for the kind words! I'm happy to see your response to my work. There will be many more stories to be told, hope you will find them interesting! :)

I lost my dog about 2 months ago and we had him for 14 years. He was a Lab/Shepard mix. Great dog with a great temperament. He would defend one minute and roll on his back the next for a belly rub. I was away on business when he passed away and it was pretty hard to take. Great post! Upvoted and followed!
@digestingreality

I hope someday I can have a couple of dogs myself. They are truly amazing. Recently my dear friend lost his Lab. Elvis as he was called always treated me like part of his family and his loss hurt me so much as I had many memories with him! Sorry to hear about your loss! I hope this post made you smile!

It sure did and thanks for the comments. It's strange the bond a man makes with his dog!

Yes! It's just incredible.

What an incredible story, nicely told. It's really good having you back with us :-)

I was calm as the Buddha himself!

Chapeau for that one. Not sure if I would have reacted in the same manner... No, I'm sure! I wouldn't have been capable... I would have been afraid. Great you recognized early that he was a future friend and not the enemy.

Keep it coming, we're here to read and follow :)

Thank you Marly! I'm happy you liked this! I have a few more travel stories I'll write about soon. I've understood from past experience that it's best not to make big decisions when we're too happy, sad and especially when we're really angry! I'm glad I choose to befriend Jimmy instead of scaring him away.

Very well said. Big decisions don't like big emotions :)
Or as one of my friends said once: "The next morning is smarter than today's evening." :)

I've been trying to think up a smart reply to what your friend said for the past 20 mins but I couldn't come up with anything! All I can think of is partying in the evening and not remembering it the next day! Think I've been at home for far too long... lol!

Haha the message was just: "Sleep over important decisions." :)
But sometimes it's also helpful to party hard and don't think about the next day. 100% agreed 😂✌️

I understood that was the message but my mind was just focusing on something else I guess haha!

What an excellent piece @firepower! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful story about one of my very favourite places in the world. Namaste :)

Wow! Thank you for the compliment. I'm really motivated after my recent accident to work harder than before so I can travel further and come back interesting stories. I'll have more coming up in the days to come! :)

Great story mate! I always felt like that animals have a way to look right into your soul and figure out your intentions. It often happened to me on my travels that I connected with wild dogs or monkeys on some weird way. They let me touch them, pet them and I even had a wild monkey in my arms for like ten minutes. But as soon as someone else came along seeing there was a monkey on my arm and trying to touch it, the monkey spat at them. If that monkey would have bitten me I could have gotten rabies or whatever. I just knew he wouldn´t bite me. It´s such a deep connection you make with them in only minutes, that makes you miss them already as soon as they´re gone just like you said!

Following you now ;-)

Thank you so much! Im glad that there are more travellers like me out there after reading your comment! I hope to see your feedback on my future posts as well. :)

This was such an amamzing story. Well true story! My mother had a dog when she was young, he memorized the time when she would get off school. And every single day he would run towards her school at the exact same time to keep her company on those hot summer afternoons. Somehow he knew my mom didn't want to walk those 3 kilometers alone. He was killed by robbers, when they tried to rob my mom's house( robberies were very frequent back then at that village and still happens sometimes). But well he saved them. Dogs really are hooman's best friends! ❤

Aww I didn't expect this. Touched my heart! Thanks yaar for sharing this!

Thank you. I'll check the story for sure.

I love this soo much!! Can't tell you how many furry friends we've made along the way and we always want to take them with us to give them a happy, warm and loving home!! BUT the transient lifestyle makes it nearly impossible to do that, and even unfair to the animals! Glad to know we're not the only ones with space in our hearts for the fur babies of the world!!!

Yes! This has happened to me a few times on my trips. I'm glad you liked the story. Follow my blogs for more interesting work. Thank you for your comment. :)

Oh wow! He's very cute! :D Nice pic too!

Your story tells me one thing, sometimes we don't analyze the situation well and acts in haste and under our rage. If we just stop for a moment and instead of charging against our problems, we could just think of the situation and analyze what has happened, we could be a better person and live a better life.

The dogs were mad because they felt disturbed and I for the same reason. Sometimes it's best to stop and think before we take any drastic steps!

What a sweet story & a cute pup!

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Very nice @firepower i love dogs too.. i have just posted a pic on steemitphotochallenge please caption it if you like it.

Hi
Great post. I am an insane dog lover. I took care of my manager's dog for 12 days and every day was like a charm with bruno (Dog's name). It was a great feeling when he used to rush towards me as soon as I was back from office. All my stress and tension used to get away just by playing with him.I realized that the world is simple when looked through dog's eyes. I think everyone should learn from dogs how to live stress free and always excited about things. It doesn't matter to them whether you are scolding or whatever, they will continue to love you endlessly.

Hooman :p

We are hooomaans! :D

You have met a good friend in your journey and enjoyed a lot.
