Dogs are probably the most loyal amongst all our domesticated creatures. History has countless stories of their fierce loyalty towards their human friends. They aren't loyal towards us just because we feed them. It seems to me as though this behaviour is ingrained into their very being.
Dogs have been bred for thousands of years to assist humans in their work as well as be a great companion! They are wired to be with us every step of the way!
This is from circa mid-2012 when I met these incredible dogs in the mountains along with their masters. I observed how these dogs acted on every single command from their masters. A whistle here or two, a word in the language of the Shepherd, indicating completely different things but they'd know their tasks and get about doing them.
They wouldn't flinch if a stranger called out their names. I tried to get them to come to me but they would just ignore me as if I didn't exist in their realm. I found it amusing and not offensive. But, when their master called upon them, they'd run like the wind to their master for treat or some affection.
They hold their ground, not a fear in the world. Up in the mountains, they roam around with their masters as if they are the gods and owners of the land! It's amazing to see them herd sheep and keep them in-line with wherever they are going!
I'm not aware of a technical name for this breed of dogs but they are commonly known as the 'Gaddi' Dogs. The name, "Gaddi" comes from the 'Gaddi Tribe' that uses these dogs for Shepherding in the foothills of the Himalaya in India. You can read about the tribe in my previous story here.
Despite looking and acting fiercely, they were also loving. A couple of hours spent around them, they seemed much more friendlier and warmed up to my presence. One of them even allowed me to pet him and play with a him a little, but these bigger, older ones were more reserved in the demeanour in the watchful eyes of their masters.
When I was a kid, I was always chased around by this particularly aggressive dog in my neighbourhood belonging to my friend in my neighbourhood. It was never leashed and every time I had to visit his home someone would have to hold it down or I'd have to make multiple attempts at reaching his door step. The dog always thought anyone approaching the house was going to attack it's owners and behaved accordingly. It was untrained of-course!
I didn't know what to do and it always growled and chased many of us kids away every time. It did put some fear in me at the time. However, as I grew older I learnt how easy it was to get a dog to befriend you and for most dogs, they just want some love and they'll come to you right away. Here's my story that trended steemit few weeks ago. It's about, "How a Himalayan Alpha Dog Domesticated a Hooman!"
Now, as I write this story, I feel like I've gone back in time and I wish I could bring one of these dogs home with me. They are incredibly smart, perhaps as smart as the smartest top breeds that you'll see around you! I remember watching @pharesim's lovely little doggy girl 'Juka' at @steemfest 2016. She was one of the nicest and smartest dogs I've ever met!
As the Shepherds wander around the great Himalaya, throughout the season, their dogs serve them as faithful companions and never allow them to feel lonely up in the mountains. It's incredible how nature has given such amazing gifts as the love of a dog to us hoomans!
Recently, when I wrote the story: FireTravels #4—Meeting Gaddi Shepherds of the Middle Land! I wrote about the moments before I left to visit the lake, and I also mentioned that I came back to a great conversation with the Shepherds. I hope you will read the aforementioned stories to learn more about this amazing place, it's people and their dogs.
On many occasions during my travels in the mountains of India, I've been tempted to bring one of these mountain dogs home! But unfortunately, the climate in the southern part of the country where I currently reside would be too warm for these incredible animals.
Have you on your travels or wherever you live, come across these types of dogs that don't belong to a mainstream breed but are incredible to have as part of your family?

I was fortunate to have spent a lot of time with these dogs on my travel and they were definitely very intelligent and loyal to their owners. Also, they showed such dedication towards their flock of sheep that they were assigned on managing.
Wow! Fantastic pictures. We're lucky to have traveled a bit!
Nice animals, mountains and sky its really gives peace to see
I'm a simple man. I see dogs, I upvote.
Haha! That's great! :D
MANS BEST FREIND! Nice post and the views look amazing.
I don't think my pups could handle that with their short hair:)
oh wow! beautiful pups! :)
Thank you! They are rescued and really don't move unless I call them either lol.
I love dogs. I was with my Dog until his last breath literally, which I almost missed but my GF at the time called me into the room. I could not put him to sleep. I probably should have to save him from the pain which is something I have questioned myself over a few times. I have not had a dog since him that was actually mine. Partially because I have never really traveled and I want to and I don't think it's fair to put a pet though missing you over and over again when you travel without them.

Hey!
Thanks a lot for the comment and the story about your dog! I think you have the right attitude as far as ownership of a dog is concerned!
It must've been so hard to lose your dog! Sorry for your loss man!
One of the reasons I dont have a dog of my own is because of the same reasons as you have mentioned above. It's a full-time responsibility and I can't do that right now in my life.
Btw, I'm already following you! Your work is fantastic!
@firepower I really enjoyed your post. I share your love for dogs, they are truly a great gift for humans. Your story about the dog that was chasing you in your childhood reminds me of my first dog.
I had a dog that had a peculiar territorial behaviour. Gimi let anybody came into our yard but when you tried to get out, that's when things got commplicated :) He would launch on a chase from the back of the yard like he was gonna rip you apart.
I don't know what went in his mind, maybe he thought they are stealing something :)
I really miss having a dog :( I can't have one at the moment because i don't have my own place and the landlord would not accept, plus i work long hours, so i wouldn't have time to properly take care o a dog.
Loved your post, voted, followed and resteemed. Steem on!
Wow! Thank you for sharing this story and for your excellent comment! :) It's great to see you take the time to leave me a feedback. :)
Somehow I've been missing your posts! So sad. This is really sweet. Take my humble 9 cent upvote on your $700+ rewards :).
haha! Thanks Kay! You didn't have to do that but I appreciate it a lot! I'm happier about the fact that you stopped by to read!
Thanks for the nice share! Must have been really scary to have a dog scare you around like that! I saw dogs like this when I visited Morocco. Most of them would be on a leash though as they'd be the protectors of the village and people would try and steal even those!
Well at least you didn't get chased by a goose...
Nice pictures and thanks for the share! It felt really heart warming to read this article and to see this pictures. :)
Haha! Absolutely right! It's always great to see your comments and thank you for stopping by.
I've never been to Morocco and would love to visit someday! :) Hoping to travel a bit more of Europe in the next year or so!
😉 do ieeeeet! And when u do post about it and take us with you that way!
haha surely! :D
Beautiful dogs! And great article on their traits! I never realized how amazing these animal were until I got my first Labrador. And then shortly after that, another and another, because I just completely fell in love with them. I think dogs are astounding in that they show so much endless loyalty to humans instinctively and they are generally very cheerful and uplifting to be around. I've never seen any thing like it. Thanks for sharing! :)
Thank you for sharing this with me! I'm glad you enjoyed this and stopped by to comment! :)
Dogs can really play a role as man's friend in times of sorrow and loneliness. Not having a friend can put your dog in a special role as a best friend, I speak from experience. My dog was my best friend when the world was empty and full of pain and misery. I loved my dog like a family member. I miss Cocoa..
Thank you for this comment and for stopping by my blog! :)
@firepower dogs rule!

Where in India are you from bro?
I'm from Mandi. :)
Down south in India! Mangalore
Nice.
I live in LA now. Miss Indian food so much.
Following you.
Cheers.
If you cannot cook then learn. I have never been anywhere outside India but I lived alone for years in Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai and I know the feeling of missing home and Maa ke hath ka khana. :)
Yes, I've learnt some cooking after moving here. But again, that feel is missing.. you know.
I've been out of home for the past 11 years now though. Lived all around in India and recently moved out last year. :)
That's a good looking "pack". Truly man's best friend.
Indeed! :) Beautiful dogs!

I used to have 4 dogs before, all were different breeds, I so much miss them because they all died in my absence. They were my only friends when I was a kid and it pains me that anytime I try getting another dog, it feels like I want to replace them.
Oh wow! I hope you can get another one home and provide it a great home and life! :)
@firepower as soon as I am able to get my own house, I will buy a lot of dogs, I can buy you one also, they are meant to accompany humans))
True that but it would be great if you could adopt one instead of buying. There are so many wonderful dogs and puppies than need a home. I hope you will consider this.
Puppies are so valued in my country, you hardly find the one to adopt, so i would prefer to buy one.
I see :)
A dog will teach you unconditional love. If you can have that in your life, things won't be too bad
thanks for sharing I really love dogs
True that!

I love dogs.. anyone who knows me will attest to that.. lol.. these dogs are really cute.. i wish my dog listened to me.. at least she listens to me more than to anyone else :) even though she is untrained, she is incredibly smart and knows exactly what is asked of her. She is also very good at getting us to do what she wants.. there's just something about her cute face.
