So you’re in Taipei, Taiwan on a visit. Maybe you’re there on a business trip. You decided to spend time in Taiwan to enjoy this beautiful island in the South China Sea. You’re a foodie who heard that Taiwanese cuisine is scrumptious. Whatever the reason, you’re here and think you have seen and done all that Taipei City has to offer—or so you think. But this relatively modern Asian city is missing something. What is it? Perhaps it’s the traditional Taiwanese culture you found in small doses amid Taipei’s modernity. Time to head out of town to visit a small Taiwanese town for something different.
You were told that Wulai is a good daytrip from Taipei — or an overnight stay — so you catch a bus and go there. You find a quaint place at the confluence of two rivers that is both idyllic and bustling, as throngs of locals and tourists alight around town in search of Wulai’s treasures.
Chances are you’re drawn to the town by its iconic waterfall, Wulai Falls, that cascades from the towering ridge above and spills into the river below. The wet veil over the sheer rock cliffs dotted with subtropical vegetation calms the air, making the often bustling town feel more relaxed. Those who see it look up in admiration.
Wulai offers you outdoor activities aplenty. Take the tram to the ridge above the falls to access walking paths overlooking the town or hiking trails that head into the mountains. Ride around town on a bicycle or cycle on the nearby highway that meanders along the river. There’s no end to the you can do outside in Wulai. You can even try river tracing and discover places off the beaten path if you’re so inclined.
Along the way, you might come upon some interesting creatures around town that catch your attention.
After a day of hiking or enjoying the outdoors, you might enjoy the hot springs. Wulai is full of resorts and spas that cater to anyone who wants to soak in steaming hot mineral water. It does a body good.
Perhaps you want to savour some delicious Taiwanese food in one of the restaurants or from street vendors on the iconic Old Street, a pedestrian area like many in Taiwan. Or shop for some souvenirs to remember your visit. Wulai offers many kinds of locally made liqueurs, syrups, and other edible treats as well as local clothing and crafts.
Wulai is a cultural village that pays homage to the indigenous Taiwanese, celebrating its vibrancy. A museum and brilliant ethnic art embellishing the town give the place a vibe that remind you of the island’s origins and a culture different from what one considers traditional Chinese.
Churches and temples coexist around town in a balanced diversity. Indigenous beliefs mingle with those that came later.
Wulai is without a doubt one the best daytrips or overnight stays from Taipei you will find. It gives you a unique taste of Taiwanese life and culture that you would be hard pressed to find in the city. The next time you happen to be in Taipei, pay a visit to Wulai. You’ll be glad you did.
