in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The Great Market Hall or Central Market Hall (Hungarian "Nagyvásárcsarnok") is the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest, Hungary.  The market offers a huge variety of stalls. As tourists, it seems inevitable to pay this place a visit. So we did. But.... probably won't in the future... you will see in a bit. Still, I will recommend you to come here and have a look. Just don't.... :)

Look around, it is very interesting to see what those stalls are selling... yes, from these stalls you can get some clue about how the lives here are like. I've always love browsing markets.

Hungarian Wine is famous. It sells not only Tokaji here...

Some handmade wood utensils. Pretty good. We bought some too! :)

It has 2nd floor, selling some souvenirs, clothes and there are also some local food stalls... Let's have a look.

We had a bite at the 2nd floor and picked a stall that had empty seats and seemed alright serving local cuisines.

Turns out ... WE GOT RIPPED OFF!! Food was lousy and extremely expensive! Of course there was no prices shown!! As we were eating their food, we looked at the owner and "the gang" walking around smiling like saying "It's not my fault ... you come here means you want to be ripped off!".... Pissed!! This is the worse place in Budapest. Other places are lovely...

Good bye central market! Probably won't see you again!

Welcome to Budapest, my hometown!

Sorry to hear what happened to you. Unfortunately, ripping off tourists is popular here. Also, take care with Taxis. I hate all the taxi drivers here, they are all douchebags, and most of them will charge more when they realize you are a tourist.
Like there was a guy who charged $150 from an Australian girl last summer at Sziget festival for a $5 ride. It went viral in local media.
Besides this, Budapest is an awesome city!
If you haven't been there, you should walk thru the Szabadság-bridge. It's closed from traffic, and usually, there are many cool programs there. It's 5 mins walk away from Vásárcsarnok.

Great! I plan to go back too! :) Glad I did not take any taxi. Szabadság-bridge noted.

Thank you local!!

I took a taxi in Budapest once, and at least I bargained the price before I got in. The number os 0s on the currency and the cheap beers doesnt make it easy to work out how much you are paying!

I second this, @ragnartheking and @deanliu.

I visited Budapest 8 years ago, and I was ripped off by a taxi driver who charged me like $50 for what should have been a cheap ride. Here's what my reaction should have been:

Unfortunately I was coming home from a party, was tired and didn't do the conversion math until the next morning.

The same thing happened to a friend of mine, who was staying in a fancier hotel than me. He got so upset that he brought it up with the reception of the hotel, demanding they took action. And they did: they contacted the taxi company and he actually ended up getting his money back. So there was def no doubt that he had been scammed.

I am sorry you got scammed with your meal. The scams aside though, Budapest is a beautiful city! Looks like you had a great time there. And seeing your images brings back some of my own memories.

Did you also visit the Szechenyi Spa Baths? I LOVED that place. So beautiful, and relaxing. Here's a pic I found from my when I visited the spa:

Overall this market seems very attractive. specially, the hand made wooden utensils adored me a lot... very nice post.

yeah, still interesting despite some unpleasant experiences.

Hey @deanliu.. Lovely post with some great photos... This post gave us the feeling of a roller coaster ride, where we experience the highs (great place) and lows (fraud restrauteurs also called the "gang" in your words 😁)... All in all a good and interesting read. Looking forward to your future posts. ✍️👍✌️📷📸📹📽️

haha. thanks!

You are welcome!

I'd really like to go there someday. Maybe once all this stuff goes to the moon.

Just don't eat what I had. :)

Nice one, bringing the Hungary oldest market to world view. Your documentary is good, the pictures are nice. At list you enjoy the meal even though is very expensive hahaha, did you pay for the smile you got from those around? they where all factored into the price of the food. Nice article. Keep it coming.

Wow, that sucks.... ive wanted to go to this market place for a long long time, everytime im in budapest i never get a chance to go, sorry you got ripped off, other places in budapest are luckily very nice and people are friendly

I am curious to know how much you paid for the dog food in the plastic dish...

haha! honestly I forgot.. it was 2 months ago. the only thing I remembered is RIP OFF!! :)

what a bustling market.. would love to visit there one day.

Have been two times too Budapest and cities around. What i remember is they always eat that same soup everyday. It doesnt taste bad with potatoes and a little peperoni. But everyday same soup!!!

this I didn't know. thanks for sharing!

Sorry to hear you got ripped off, you were just unlucky. I have been a couple of times and work with Hungarian people and they all tend to be very friendly. I just came back two days ago and posted about Budapest 15 mins ago https://steemit.com/@robertolopez . Upvoted and followed, good post!

Upvoted and followed. :)
Interesting post about the budapest air race!
And I love Hungarian people except those who ripped me off! :)

nice post, i love budapest, i have had to leave, but it is still my town

This is the nice thing with the market in other countries like yours, its clean and organize. I am not trying to dishonor my country, but most of our markets here in the Philippines are not organize and is not looking. Im not talking about supermarkets in huge malls, Im talking about the wet market.

Although the country has this market looks, still, we have a vast of tourists spots that spread around the archipelago which makes us all proud then. Somehow, in the every place, there is this disadvantages and advantages, and Philippines is among those countries.

@deanliu great story with beautiful photos :) You are near, Poland! Come and visit Warsaw :) I am creating posts about this great city. Please check my stories for details :)
All the best.

Anyone who does to Budapest should also try to visit Buda Castle and Margaret Island. Very nice places. And they should go to a spa like Szecheni thermal bath.

I missed my chance to visit Budapest 9 years ago. I was in a business trip to Munich for 2 weeks. Togehter with my colleagues we enjoyed southern part of Germany, as well as Vienna during weekends. After the business trips my colleagues decided to stay behind and visit Budapest, but I had to go home to take care my wife who was pregnant at that time.
It is a nice place and I missed the chance to be there in person, so I rely on you to show me more about this wonderful city.

no problem man... pregnant wife is always the most important thing in the world! you can always go later. :)

When we were there it was closed!

Pro tip: the central market is only open earlier in the day.

However, after you visit the central market, you're a short bridge-crossing away from Budapest Cave Church, which is really cool.

And from there you can climb up to the top of the hill with the Liberty Statue and get even cooler view over the city.

cool. noted for next trip.

Sorry to hear you got ripped off. The market looks interesting and full of hustle and bustle.

Thanks for sharing... @deanliu keep it up

European has lots of magic place, bravo!

How much did you pay for the food in the picture? Just curious.

In general I consider Budapest as one of the best travel bargains around. 1650 HUF (5 eur) for a day transport ticket, 5 eur for lunch many in various cafes around.

Great post. I want to go there

Wow! This is great! Budapest is one of my favorite cities in europe!

Yes Hungarian paprika is well-known in Europe. Did you visit Romania? It's close to Hungary.
