Unbeknownst to me at the time, the lavender industry is not only a huge one, but the farms are also a burgeoning tourist destination in Tasmania.
We just landed that morning, shoveled down some bacon-and-egg sandwiches in Launceston and headed on to our first destination of the trip - Bridestowe Lavender Estate.
This estate is one of the premier lavender producers in the region. It is certainly the most popular, and we could tell that fact immediately as we dodged tour buses in the car park. As one would leave, another would arrive and the visitors would pile out into the gift shop, stocking up on lucky lavender teddy bears and other goods which, by the looks of it, these people traveled halfway across the world to purchase.
We wander out of the hustle and bustle of the gift shop and go for a stroll through the fields. We were a few weeks to early so we could only see the beginning of the rich-purple bloom of the lavender field that this area is famous for.
The two large trees which stand tall and proud have some inviting shade, but once under its protection from the hot sun, you realise you are sharing the reprieve with a million buzzing bees. The lawn mowers I heard in the distance while wandering weren't machines at all but the busy hives hidden by the trees. So while we sat for a few minutes, and they started getting a little too comfortable with us before we decided we had pushed our luck and continued wandering, smelling the fresh lavender and taking snapshots.
These trees are like the most photogenic models.
I can still smell the aroma of these fields. I will one day visit during their bloom.
Who'd have thought I would have enjoyed a Lavender farm as much as I did. My girlfriend still uses the products she bought that day, and she even brought two bottles of the scent to Europe with her.
