Do you like waterfalls?
On the 13th of August, 2017, my wife, our kids, and my sister joined me on a visit to Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, Alabama.
Before anyone else was even out of the car, I saw a “flutterby” that reminded me of a polyphemus moth I’d raised and released into the wild when I was a child long ago. This is probably a different species, yet had a vaguely similar appearance, due to also having faux eyes on its tan wings.
The Alabama August weather was bright and hot at street level, enough so to cause discomfort.
Above: sister; wife; and oldest child, who isn’t a child anymore.
Down in the Black Creek gorge, however, it was breezy, shady, and cool. Our short walk to the falls would be a pleasant, easy hike.
Above: our younger daughter, who’s the middle child; and some passersby on the trail.
My sister is a better photographer than I. She also has much better equipment. I merely “make do” with my iPhone’s built-in camera for now. Maybe someday I can persuade her to become a Steemian and share some of her pictures here.
Left to right, above: all 3 of our children, by chance in birth order.
Recent rain had given the waterfall a fairly impressive flow.
more on the way
More glimpses of our family’s visit to Noccalula Falls are coming in future installments. Part two is here.
about me
Earlier this week, I introduced myself in this post.
How deep is the pool? Has anyone ever kayaked off of it?
Three expert kayakers actually plunged over the falls in November 2011.
A film was made, but then taken offline due to a copyright dispute over the music. One of the movie trailers remains online:
This is awesome!!!! I might have to do some digging and try and find the whole movie!!!!
Beautiful post. I enjoyed it.
Thanks! There are more to come.
