OSAKA SOUL FOOD 'OKONOMIYAKI' with HIGHBALL / Travel Story / Life Photography

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

This beautiful food is a Japanese pancake Okonomiyaki.

Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き? o-konomi-yaki)  is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning "how you like" or "what you like", and yaki meaning "grill" (cf. yakitori and yakisoba). Okonomiyaki is mainly associated with the Kansai or Hiroshima areas of Japan, but is widely available throughout the country. Toppings and batters tend to vary according to region. In Tokyo, there is liquid okonomiyaki called 'monjayaki.'

Okonomiyaki is one of my favorite Japanese foods. It is similar to Korean seafood pancake but there is the difference of the ingredients. There are lots of cabbage and meat with a variety of condiments. I think it can be called Japanese pizza.

I really wanted to have a very good Okonomiyaki for my first dinner in Osaka. I looked around the food street and picked one which is filled with many people. I waited outside for minutes until I'm called inside. I was excited.

I ordered one Okonomiyaki with a draft beer as soon as I sit there.

The Okonomiyaki was served like the picture. It was so beautiful. The grilled Okonomiyaki smelled so delicious. I covered with two toppings of Katsuobushi and Aonori.

Katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes): Katsuobushi is shaved flakes of fermented and smoked bonito. It’s a super umami rich ingredient that we use it to make dashi (Japanese stock for miso soup and all kinds of Japanese dishes). These flakes are super paper-thin – when you sprinkle on top of the okonomiyaki, they dance along with the steam! You can buy it from Amazon and Japanese/Asian grocery stores. You can omit this ingredient if you absolutely dislike fishy smell.

Aonori (dried green seaweed): It is dried green (Ao) seaweed (Nori) flakes/powder. This umami-rich seaweed has bright intense green color and has unique fragrant. Interesting fact: in ancient Japan, Ao (pronounce as [ah-o]) means green in traditional Japanese language (there were 4 colors; white, black, red, and green. These days, Ao means blue in contemporary Japanese).

I added two more foods and a glass of Highball. You should try this Japanese cocktail. I prefer a Highball than a draft beer with the Japanese grilled foods.

Highball is the name for a family of mixed alcoholic drinks that are composed of an alcoholic base spirit and a larger proportion of a non-alcoholic mixer. Wikipedia

Nice post. Food looks delicious.

Thank you for the comment.:)

Wow. Big upvote. I love okonomoyaki and i truly believe it is the soul food in osaka too. I love how they put in vegetable and egg along with the meat you want to balance the nutrients and also it is very enjoya ble to eat it with a cup of cold beer.

Okonomiyaki with a cold beer is very good. I feel you really like the food. Glad you enjoyed. :)

I'd like to eat it in a bite.
I'm hungry.

I love japanese (and korean) pancakes!

Usually they will mix the ingredients and cook it in front of you.

The heat from the grill makes me sweat uncomfortably tho!

Thank you!!

It's interesting to read about the differences between the Korean and Japanese versions of the pancake. I like shaved bonito and dried seaweed. I use them when I go camping, to make some of my meals taste a lot better! You sure enjoyed a lot of different things on your May trip!

Hope you enjoy my travel stories. :) @haphazard-hstead

I do. It's interesting to learn about the difference between the Korean and Japanese ways of cooking and other things that you see.

Glad you enjoy my posts. :D

Never seen these before! They look amazing.

So yummy. You'll like them @amy-goodrich :)

I'm sure I will! If we ever have the chance to visit Japan (which I'm sure will be soon) and Korea I think I'm going to leave with a few pounds extra! Always love seeing this dishes! Now I'm hungry again hehe

I admire you foodie passion :) Upvoted. Love the colors of it even if I would not eat all of it, it's totally artsy ;)

Foodie? ^^;; The word doesn't fit for me. :) Thank you for your compliment. Cool @jankasparec

I had okonomiyaki twice, and I like it a lot! Can't wait to visit Japan again and eat again, it definitely is one of my favorite foods too. As I know in different parts of Japan a different style okonomiyaki is served. The Osaka one is not the same as the "western style" from Kyushu.
Anyway it looks amazing. Got me feel hungry :)

Right. Even if it is a same food, there could be a different style. Osaka people call Okonomiyaki a soul food. Try to eat it in Osaka when you visit. :) @mdosev

I'll be verry happy if I could go there and try it.

Bontonstory, you did another great article! Your Okonomiyaki story was interesting and delicious. I wish I could reach out into your picture and take it out. Good detailed information which I liked a lot. Keep up the great work! By the way, if you are ever in Hawaii, and you want to eat Okonomiyaki, you should check out my daughter's boyfriend's site (kingsaruxiii) on steemit. He did an article called Hawaii Food Adventures #1: A Tale of Two Okonomiyakis. He did a taste test between two well know places to get good Okonomiyaki. He loves food and knows great places to eat on Oahu. Again, great and interesting article. Thank-you!

Thank you for the information and your daughter's boyfriend @kingsaruxiii (is it steemit name?) ...I'll check it out. :) @cabbagepatch

Damn, making me wish I was back in Japan! Those scallops and yakisoba looks freaking good! Nice shots!

Oh, I forgot to write about the grilled scallops. Those were soooo yummy. Umm..I want to eat them again now.

Nice pictures!!I love okonomoyaki as well. The well balance of veggies, meet and flour mixed and most importantly the sauce on top make it very tasty. Yumyum !!

Thumbs up!! :)

You are noganoo?? If you are, I think you and your friend struggled because of the trouble. I didn't know what was wrong exactly, but it looked so bad. Nothing solved? Hope you found a good exit. @nog

That is good. @nog I hope it keeps going well. :D

Your post is making me hungry! Upvoted and followed for more yummy food :)

Can't explain the taste. The iced highball is similar to a cold beer. Was cool. Thank you!! :)
