South America: Salar D'uyuni

in #travel7 years ago

During travelling Bolivia you can't miss out on Salar D'uyuni. These are the largest salt flats in the world and are located on the border between Bolivia and Chile. From Bolivia, you need to go to the city of Uyuni and take a tour from there to reach them!

This is the little city of Uyuni, very small and cute! It has an amazing atmosphere to it!

When we were there, the people were on strike and the petrol supply was blocked. So we were stuck in the village for 2 days. Of course, we just relaxed, enjoyed the village and waited for the petrol to come in.

First stop: The train junkyard. Old used trains that set an amazing environment for cool photos! You can climb on them and jump over them since they were put there to stay anyway.

The place is built up by pure ocean salt. Millions of years ago the ocean was here. Then when land rose higher, the ocean flooded away but left salt residue, creating these salt fields. They actually taste like salt to!

The dakar rally was also here in 2013! Must have been an amazing spot to rally!!

This was a little hotel we stayed at that was made completly out of salt! We got lucky because they also had natural hot springs next to them, so we could bath at night when it was freezing outside but still nice and hot in the water!

Next, to the big salt flats you also have other points of interest.

Such as natural geisers! Sad story, when we were there a girl fell in them and had to be evacuated back home while her friend stayed and travelled onwards.

And to end the little story, a jumping photo in which we actually succeeded to jump!!
