RE: Travel Tips for Backpacking in India

in #travel6 years ago

This post RESONATES sooooo much after 16 years of me living here in Thailand. Can't tell you how many upset, sick and distressed travelers I have helped, sent to the hospital, and yes - even organised cremations for. This stuff is REAL Your tips are great, except for the vegetarian one, which is really off base. Studies here in Thailand show that the most likely things to give you food poisoning are actually rice, and oranges. Rice - cos rice cookers often use tap water and it doesn't get hot enough to kill ecoli etc. And oranges. So much fruit is fertilized with pig excrement and no one washes the fruit properly before juicing. Eating veggie and thinking it protects you lulls you into a false sense of security. Bit mostly GREAT TIPS and super helpful to newbie travelers.

Hit me up for a coffee if you ever make it to Chiang Mai, Thailand. :)

Thanks for reading and your input! I have never been to Thailand so I am not so sure about the situation there but, in India, being vegetarian definitely helps. Obviously the only sure fire way to prevent illness is being vigilant and I hope it didn't come across I was saying simply being veggie will be enough in India. The sentiment was just meant to be that it will drastically limit the chances of becoming ill. Potatoes, for example, are something which can cause illness if not heated properly due to the staph bacteria. However, the illnesses you get from veg (generally) are not as threatening as those from meat and grains.

I definitely will keep you in mind! Likewise if you're ever in London

I think probably reheated veggie is as dangerous as meat dishes, and after all this time in Asia I think I have seen more really sick vegetarians than anyone else - cos they assume it's safe. Yes - be vigilant, don't eat street food and always buy your precooked food very early in the day.

And always travel with an abundant supply of charcoal tablets... LOL.... #1 foolproof way to blitz almost any food borne nasty in under 24 hours if you take it HOURLY. So much to learn - so much amazing food. :) All good. Do you have plans to see more of India? I have so many amazing Indian people and friends on steem! :)
